April 2013

April is Autism Awareness Month
Autism Awareness Month has been celebrated since the 1970's. Since that time, the number of children diagnosed with autism has grown greatly. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in six children have a developmental disability and one in 88 has autism.

In addition to the Centers for Disease Control, there are many local, state and national organizations where you can find information and resources on autism.  Below are some of those organizations:

Special Education Parent Involvement Survey

Top IEP Meeting Tips
  1. Review last year's IEP and any documents sent home to you 5 days before the meeting. Use PPMD's IEP checklist to help you think about any questions you may have.
  2. Highlight areas for discussion and make a list of concerns. Be sure to include areas of growth (so you can celebrate!) and areas that need improvement.
  3. Ask questions about anything you don't understand or want explained and bring a friend to take notes and support you.

Healthy People 2020 Report

Every decade, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services publishes Healthy People, a document that provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. Healthy People 2020 includes almost 600 objectives in 42 categories, from Disability and Health to Genomics to Public Health Infrastructure. The authors of Healthy People 2020 recognized that children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN) deserve dedicated objectives to foster better health in this particularly vulnerable group, so there are about 100 objectives in Healthy People 2020 related specifically to CYSHCN.  You can download the report at the Genetic Alliance website.
