Ideas and Inspirations for living                                         July 17, 2015

Now is a great time to spruce up your yard.  Take advantage of your "Lucky Bucks" to create you own sale.

As the temperatures rise, proper care of planters and hanging baskets is very important.  The same applies to flowers, vegetables, and herb plants growing in a container.

Be sure to water consistently everyday or as needed. It is best if you can water at approximately the same time every day.  Don't wait for wilting to occur. Don't over water, plants can't grow in standing water. Water just enough for water to start to drip from the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot.

Fertilize weekly with Nature's Source Plant Food or Ferti-lome Hanging Basket & Geranium Food, water soluble fertilizers, to keep them growing, blooming, and healthy.

Need to freshen your planters?  Great buys in the greenhouse make it the perfect time to replace and refurbish your pots.  Make sure to adequately water those new additions to your planters.

Happy gardening!

Don't let lawn insects get the best of your lawn!

Use the best lawn insect control now.

Grub damage in lawn In Southeast Idaho, we have basically three types of insects that can cause severe damage to our lawns.  You may have one, two, or all three insects present in you lawn.  Lawn insect damage is often mistaken for heat and drought stress.  Extra watering will not correct the problem.

White Grubs are the immature life stage of Japanese beetles.  They feed on the roots of grass, cutting off the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients. This results in yellowing or browning of the turf, making the grass easy to pull up.  The major damage shows up when the weather gets hot and the turf becomes stressed.

Grubs are relatively easy to control with Grub Free Zone.  Apply
May 15 - June 15
.  Timing is critical for season long control. If you missed that application or put in on too early in the season, you can apply Grub Free Zone now.

Billbug Grub Billbug damage usually appears in late-June through August.  Light infestations in lawns often produce small dead spots that look like the turf disease, dollar spot. Sometimes the damage looks like irregular mottling or browning in the turf. Heavy infestations can result in complete destruction of the turf.  Damaged turf turns a whitish-straw color. Soil under damaged turf is solid, not spongy as in white grub attacks. To confirm billbug attacks, grasp the affected turf and pull upward. If the stalks break easily at ground level and the stems are hollowed out or are full of packed sawdust-like material, billbugs are the culprit.

Billbugs are hard to control.  The best control is Grub Free Zone.  Two applications may be necessary.  The first application is June 1-15. The second is in August. Again, timing is critical.

Adult lawn moth of the sod webworm Sod web worm damage may first appear in early spring as small dead patches of grass.  The summer generation may cause turf thinning or irregular dead patches in late June into early August in sunny areas, often on south facing, steep slopes and banks, where it is hot and dry.  They emerge from their tunnels in turf thatch at night and chew the blades off.  The adult moths fly in late June and mid-August.  These small moths fly up while mowing or walking around the lawn.

The best control for sod web worm is Natural Guard Grub Control.  It will also control white grubs and billbugs.  Grub Free Zone will not control sod web worm.  You can also spray with Ferti-lome Garden Pet & Livestock, acephate, or spinosad.

When you have had damage from lawn insects and applied the proper insecticide to control them it is time to fertilize your lawn to help it rebound from the damage.  Ferti-lome lawn fertilizers are the best choice to make for lawn fertilization.

You may never see this little guy,
but you'll see the damage he causes.

Black Vine Beetle
Black Vine Beetle

Vine beetles cause damage on a wide range of plants, both in its adult and larval stages. The adult beetles eat irregular notches in leaf margins, while the more damaging grubs destroy the roots and tubers of many plants. It is very easy to not even notice until the damage is very severe.

Plants especially damaged by black vine beetles:
  • lilacs
  • peonies
  • roses
  • euonymus
  • plus many more

The symptomsDamage from a Black Vine Beetle you will usually see are the notched leaves. The beetles feed at night, so it is rare to see them on the plants.

This beetle is very hard to control. Systemic insecticides are the only control. Chemicals such as Systemic Insect Control (Acephate) and Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench can be used as a soil drench to control adult and grub populations in the soil.

You can spray the foliage with Acephate.  Spraying should occur 2 hours after sunset, when the beetles have emerged to feed.
