April Gardening

Things to do in April . . .

  • Add spring color to your yard.  It's a great time to plant pansies and perennials.
  • Apply dormant oil spray to fruit trees, snowball bushes and shrubs.
  • Use Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench now to have season long protection from aphids, scale, and other insects on trees and shrubs.
  • As the weather warms up, plant cabbage, broccoli, and root crops.  Plants will be arriving approximately April 15th.
  • Mow your lawn short and apply Ferti-i-lome Pro Green for the start of a gorgeous lawn.
  • Apply Natural Guard Soil Activator (humates) to your lawn, garden, flower and shrub beds to feed the soil and decompose the dead grass.  Apply it to your vegetable garden to increase the vitamin content of the vegetables you grow.
  • Dump old potting soil from your planters into your garden or flower beds and work in.
  • Cut back perennial flowers and grasses to the ground before new growth starts.
  • Apply pre-emergent weed control to landscape and flower beds before weeds start to grow to save hours of weeding.
  • Take your cue from nature on pruning roses.  When the beautiful, yellow forsythia bushes are blooming is the best time to prune rose bushes.  With our early spring, the forsythias have been in full bloom for weeks, so if you haven't already pruned your hybrid tea and grandiflora roses, now is the time to do so.
  • Prune summer blooming flowering shrubs, such as potentilla, sun hydrangeas, spirea, etc. now.  The best time to prune spring blooming flowering shrubs, such as lilacs, forsythias, and flowering plums is right after they bloom in the spring.
