Ideas and Inspirations for living                                           March 26, 2015

It's Officially Spring!

What a wonderful spring we have had so far.  A cold day every now and then snaps us back into reality of what the date really is.  As the days get longer and the weather is staying warmer, there are a few tasks to keep you busy in the yard and garden.  The best part is just getting out in the yard and breathing the fresh air.  It's a great time to plant pansies!

Early spring is such a fresh and exciting time at Pinehurst and we hope that you can join us in welcoming in a brand new gardening year!  We can't wait for you to see all the new and exciting products that have arrived and are arriving daily.

Come in, walk through the greenhouses, and get a little spring fever relief.

Welcome to spring,
Vicky

In March our gardens begin to wake up.

Things to do in March
  • Prune fruit trees.
  • Spray all fruit trees and any trees that have scale with dormant oil spray.  This will smother over-wintering pests, including scale.
  • Prune your non-blooming evergreen trees and shrubs. Cut to the height and width you want. Remove any old weak stems at the ground level. Follow by feeding them with Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Food.
  • Wait to prune spring blooming shrubs until right after they bloom.
  • Prune the old blossoms from sun hydrangeas and shape the plant.  Wait until May to prune shade hydrangeas.
  • Prune roses.  The Forsythia bushes are in full bloom, which is the signal to uncover and prune Hybrid Tea and Grandiflora rose bushes.
  • Clean the leaves and debris from the flower beds.
  • Prune your summer blooming clematis to about 1 foot from the ground. Wait to prune your spring blooming clematis until after it has bloomed.
  • Apply Ferti-lome Pro Green fertilizer to your lawn.
  • Apply Soil Activator to your lawn, vegetable garden, and flower beds.
  • Cut perennials to the ground.
  • Cut back perennial grasses as close to the crown as you can.

Flower Seeds

Wait until April to grow other fast growing tender vegetables.  They will quickly grow too large for transplanting.

Seeds started indoors require the same basic conditions as those started outside. But since their environment must be artificially maintained, it takes a little more attentiveness. Just as for all plants, the three basic requirements are soil, light and water. But in each case there are special considerations.  Read More . . .
