Don't let lawn insects get the best of your lawn

Grub damage in lawn Use the best lawn insect control now, because timing is critical.

In Southeast Idaho, we have basically three types of insects that can cause severe damage to our lawns. Lawn insect damage is often mistaken for heat and drought stress.  Timing of control is critical.

White Grubs are the immature life stage of Japanese beetles.  They feed on the roots of grass, cutting off the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients. This results in yellowing or browning of the turf, making the grass easy to pull up.  The major damage shows up when the weather gets hot and the turf becomes stressed.

Grubs are relatively easy to control with Grub Free Zone.  Apply
May 15 - June 15
.  Timing is critical.

Billbug damage usually appears in late-June through August.  Light infestations in lawns often produce small dead spots that look like the turf disease, dollar spot. Sometimes the damage looks like irregular mottling or browning in the turf. Heavy infestations can result in complete destruction of the turf.  Damaged turf turns a whitish-straw color. Soil under damaged turf is solid, not spongy as in white grub attacks. To confirm billbug attacks, grasp the affected turf and pull upward. If the stalks break easily at ground level and the stems are hollowed out or are full of packed sawdust-like material, billbugs are the culprit.

Billbugs are hard to control.  The best control is Grub Free Zone.  Two applications may be necessary.  The first application is June 1-15. The second is in August. Again, timing is critical.

Sod web worm damage may first appear in early spring as small dead patches of grass.  The summer generation may cause turf thinning or irregular dead patches in late June into early August in sunny areas, often on south facing, steep slopes and banks, where it is hot and dry.  They emerge from their tunnels in turf thatch at night and chew the blades off.  The adult moths fly in late June and mid-August.  These small moths fly up while mowing or walking around the lawn.
The best control for sod web worm is Natural Guard Grub Control.  You can also spraying with Ferti-lome Garden Pet & Livestock, acephate, or spinosad
