Fall is for Gardening

  Vicky Kendrick

The weather is starting to change and the fall color will not be far off. The recent rains we have had are greatly benefiting the landscape and lawns.

Fall is the time to tidy up things around the garden. To do so, cut back perennials, remove dead annuals and remove weeds along with leaf debris. This simple neatening will keep your garden healthy through the winter and help protect against pests and disease.

Another way to keep your garden healthy through winter is to mulch. Mulching in the fall helps keep temperatures consistent and protects the soil against heaving, which can cause roots to break.  A great mulch, that is easy to use, is soil pep.  This is ground bark.

Fall can be very hectic.  Take time to relax, reduce your stress, and enjoy the beautiful warm days of fall in your yard.

Two fun and exciting events are coming up at Pinehurst. Be sure to mark your calendar, you won't want to miss either one. ISU Homecoming Kickoff Event is October 3rd and Pinehurst Annual Scarecrow Auction is October 16th.  Both are open and free to everyone.

Happy fall gardening!

Fall Lawn Care

Easy Steps for a Beautiful Lawn Next Spring

Fall lawn care.

How to Care for your Grass
in the Fall

Summer can be hard on our lawns.  During a year with extreme heat  lawns can take a beating. Fall is the perfect time to help your lawn recover from the stresses of summer and prepare for winter.  The warm soil and cooler temperatures promote root growth and thickening of the lawn.

Continue to mow the lawn as long as it keeps growing.

The last mowing of the season should be very short, this will help to prevent winter diseases, such as snow mold.

Mow the leave to mulch and collect

Easy way to remove the fallen leaves.

Spread them out on the lawn and mow the leaves and grass to shred the leaves.   Collect the leaves in your bag for an easy way to clean up your leaves.

Fall is the most important time to fertilize your lawn.

Be sure to fertilize.

Fall is absolutely the most important time to fertilize your lawn. Fertilize with Ferti-lome Winterizer now.

Using Natural Guard Soil Activator,

(humates), together with Ferti-lome Winterizer will reward you with steady improvement in your soil's fertility and at the same time decrease the incidence of disease, stress, and soil borne infections. With regular use, you can expect healthy soils, rich in organic matter.

Keep watering your lawn.

It is important to deep water.  It is better to water less often, for a longer period of time. This will also greatly benefit your trees, shrubs and perennials.

Fall is a great time to overseed thin lawns.

Grass seed germinates better in cooler temperatures. Use a rake to loosen the soil, in bare spots, to get good seed to soil contact.

Control weeds in the fall.

Little fall weeds become big spring weeds.

By applying lawn weed killer in the fall, you can get many weeds when they are young, before they become difficult to eradicate.

Broad-leaf weeds in the lawn are easily controlled by spraying with Ferti-lome faster-acting Weed Free Zone.

Beautiful Fall Color . . .

Dwarf Burning Bush
Dwarf Burning Bush

This is a beautiful, graceful, green, leafy bush that becomes a brilliant scarlet color in the fall. An unusual corky bark adds to the winter appearance.

This compact grower will grow in sun or shade. Full sun is needed for the burning bush to reach its full color potential.  Red fall color will be less intense when grown in the shade. Use it as a specimen plant or a care-free hedge.

It grows 4-6' tall and 4-6' wide and is hardy to zone 4, which is -20 to -30F.
