The days are finally starting to cool from the heat we have experienced this summer. The nights are becoming cooler, as well. A walk through my yard today revealed the benefits of the cooler temperatures, not to mention the rains we have had recently. The annual flowers are starting to perk up with a burst of growth and increased blossoms, both in planters, as well as planted in the ground. The trees and shrubs are also showing relief and the grass is growing great. Unfortunately the weeds are growing real fast, too. My next walk through will be with a sprayer of herbicide.
A question often asked this time of year is "How can I get all my green tomatoes to ripen?" By decreasing the water you apply to the
Don't let Wasps, Hornets, or Yellowjackets Ruin Your Picnic
The family and friends have arrived. Just as you set down on the patio for a nice relaxing meal and the food is served, you are suddenly swarmed with pesky yellowjackets or wasps, who have also arrived for the meal. In late summer they may be persistent, unwelcomed guests at picnics, barbecues and during outdoor dining where they scavenge for food.
The best way to control them is by the use of traps.
W·H·Y Trap for Wasps, Hornets & Yellowjackets
The RESCUE!® W·H·Y® Trap catches 5 species of Paper Wasps, Bald-faced Hornets, and European Hornets, and 12 species of Yellowjackets.
The W·H·Y® Trap has a top chamber and a bottom chamber. The top chamber is baited with two attractants -- one of which is a solid contained in a vial, and the other a liquid mixed with water. The bottom chamber is baited with a liquid attractant poured onto a cotton pad. Wasps, hornets and yellowjackets have two ways to enter: either through the top cap, or through the holes in the bottom cap.

Rescue! Yellowjacket Trap
Roughly a dozen species of yellowjackets throughout North America are known to bite and sting people. RESCUE!'s Reusable Yellowjacket Trap is designed to lure them all.
How it works:
RESCUE!s exclusive attractant draws them in through holes in the bottom of the plastic cylinder where they become trapped and eventually die of dehydration. The scientifically formulated attractant lasts for weeks without daily maintenance. The trap's durable construction holds up in sunlight for many seasons of use and its clear plastic walls allow the user to see the yellowjacket "body count" so they can empty the trap as required.

Fall, the most important season in the garden
Fall has traditionally been viewed as the end of the line, basically time to pick the tomatoes and rake leaves before everything freezes. In reality though, fall is the most important season in the garden.
Spring is a growth season, while fall is an establishment season. In spring, you get amazing foliage growth and flowering, while in fall you get spectacular root growth and an extended period of time to settle in.
Planting . . . Planting hardy trees, shrubs and perennials in the fall gives you much stronger and better established plants the next spring or summer. Be sure not to plant too deep. The cooler weather of fall creates a perfect opportunity for plants to establish in a low stress environment.
