Greetings!
  Vicky Kendrick
Now is the time to prune your spring blooming plants, such as lilacs and forsythia.  By pruning now, you will not affect their blooming next spring.  Next year flowers are formed on the new growth this year.  This is a task you don't want to wait any longer to do.

It's exciting to watch the plants grow quickly and it's still a great time to plant.  We have received new shipments of popular shrubs, Easy Elegance roses, and perennials.  The greenhouses and nursery are full of some great plants that will transform your backyard into an outdoor living space you'll enjoy everyday.  Your front yard transformation will be added value to your home.

Thanks to all that made our annual Ladies Night such a great success. We had a great time and with your help, raised money for a great program, Drive for the Cure.

Reward yourself!  Using your "Lucky Bucks" is a great way to get the things you've been waiting for.

Happy gardening!

Perennial Grasses

Perennial grass planting

Give your garden four seasons of interest with low-maintenance perennial grasses.  Ornamental grasses are one of the most versatile groups of plants. They add life, motion and sound to the landscape.  They are easy to maintain, cut them back to the ground in the spring, before their new growth appears.  Divide them when they die out in the center. Another great attribute of perennial grasses is that they are deer resistant.

Here are some of the best varieties.

Hameln Grass

Pennisetum

 'Hameln'

This attractive grass is highlighted by fluffy, buff-colored plumes arching above its green foliage. The blooms are spectacular and last from mid-summer to fall. The foliage turns golden russet in fall. It creates a terrific contrast when used among shrubs or as a backdrop for perennial bed. It grows to 24" tall and 24" wide. It is hardy to zone 4 which is temperatures reaching -30 to -20ºF.

CalamagrostisKarl Foerster Grass

It grows up to 24" tall and 24" wide with flower stalks that can grow up to 6 ft. It is hardy to Hardiness Zone 4  which is temperatures reaching -30 to -20ºF.

Elijiah Blue Grass

Festuca

'Elijah Blue'

The outstanding, icy blue coloration to this clumping ornamental grass is maintained through the heat of summer. It blooms in late summer with buff colored flowers that create an eye-catching contrast. It is perfectly suited for edging borders or mass planting as a groundcover. It is a fast grower and is drought tolerant when established. It grows to 10" tall and 18" wide.  It is hardy to Zone 4 which is temperatures reaching  -30 to -20º.

You may never see this little guy,
but you'll see the damage he causes.

Black Vine Beetle
Black Vine Beetle
Vine beetles cause problems on a wide range of plants, both in its adult and larval stages. The adult beetles eat irregular notches in leaf margins, while the more damaging grubs destroy the roots and tubers of many plants. It is very easy to not even notice until the damage is very severe.

Damage from a Black Vine BeetlePlants especially damaged by black vine beetles are lilacs, peonies, roses, and euonymus, plus many more. The symptoms you will usually see are the notched leaves. The beetles feed at night, so it is rare to see them on the plants.

This beetle is very hard to control. Systemic insecticides are the only control. Chemicals such as Systemic Insect Control (Acephate) and Merrit (imidacloprid) can be used as a soil drench to control adult populations in the soil. Spraying of the foliage with Acephate should occur 2 hours after sunset, when the beetles have emerged to feed.
