The First Step to a Beautiful Garden

The first step to a beautiful garden is great soil. Turning a plot of lifeless dirt into rich, dark, topsoil that planCompostts will love and grow well in is easier than you might think.

Whether your working with heavy clay or sandy soil, adding a lot of organic material is the trick to healthy, rich soil.  Organic matter helps to lighten clay soil and helps sandy soil hold moisture.  Organic matter should be added yearly.  Great soils get better every year.  In the spring, good sources of organic matter are soil pep (ground up bark), cotton bur compost, and your compost pile.

In the fall, cover your garden with leaves and grass clippings.  Till them in, to break down over winter.  If using well rotted manure, add it only in the fall to prevent plant burn that can occur if it is applied in the spring.

As you get out and work in your garden, remember when preparing your soil for planting, it is important to turn or till the soil to add air, which your plants roots need for proper growth. Work the soil when it is moist enough to dig easily, but not so wet that the soil is muddy and heavy.  Working the soil when it is too wet will damage the soil structure. A clump of soil should crumble easily in your hand when you apply a little pressure, that tells you it is just right to work with.  Don't over till.  Two times through the garden is enough.  Too much tilling will break down the soil. The purpose of tilling is to loosen the soil, get air in, and mix organic matter evening into the soil.

Never add sand to clay soil.  It will result in an undesirable batch of concrete.

Adding Soil Activator, which contains humates, is also key.  This natural based soil conditioner improves water penetration, unlocks soil nutrients to improve soil fertility, and enhances root development.
