Knit Healthy with Carson Demers
|
| | Carson Demers - Ergo, I Knit | |
Help us welcome renowned knitter, instructor and physical therapist Carson Demers to A Yarn Less Raveled! Carson will be our guest for three very special workshops, teaching us how to work with our bodies and adjust our knitting techniques to avoid injury so we can knit comfortably and with ongoing health.
Join us for one, two, or all three sessions and get ready to knit on without pain!
KnittRx/My Aching Wrists and Hands - Friday, August 19 from 6-9pm
Knitting is not a "no pain, no gain" activity. Yet many of us take better care of our favorite stash fiber than we do the fibers that allow us to knit-our bodies. Tired muscles, sore joints, and aching backs and necks needlessly plague too many knitters. This class will teach you fun ways of "fiber care" for the most important project you make-YOU! Don't let the preventable keep you from doing what you love. Knit on, safely and comfortably!
Learn what contributes to knitter's discomfort and most importantly, how to avoid it. Unlearn techniques that don't serve to keep you knitting comfortably, learn to make choices to ease the work your hands do, and even some tips for making them feel better.
Supplies Needed: Bring materials to take notes. This is a presentation/discussion format.
Key Class Details:
- Prerequisites: Class is suitable for all levels of knitting experience.
- Fee: $60
Knitting Happily Ever After - Ergonomics for Knitters - Saturday, August 20, 9am-12pmEver known a knitter who hasn't said, "Just one more row"? Me neither! I'll bet they've also complained of aches and pains while knitting. In this class, you'll learn how knitting effects the "fabric that makes the fabric"- your body, and see how your knitting technique impacts your efficiency and productivity.
By completing a Risk of Injury assessment in class you'll learn how knitting contributes to those aches and pains throughout your body. But more importantly, you'll learn how to reduce them. A little knowledge and some simple changes can keep you knitting comfortably and safely ever after. (This class is not an individual knitting assessment.)
Students who've taken this class have said that it should be "required learning for all knitters regardless of experience level!" and, "it's as important as the knit and purl stitches!"
Supplies Needed: Bring a knitting project of your choosing, a bath-sized towel, and materials to take notes.
Key Class Details:
- Prerequisites: Class is suitable for all levels of knitting experience.
- Fee: $60
Swatchbuckling - Saturday, August 20, 1-4pm
Avast ye maties! Let's bring improved ergonomics to life in your knitting technique. We'll swatch to improve your posture, comfort, and efficiency. We'll examine yarn tensioning techniques, and all phases of stitch creation, first with simple then more challenging swatches and stitches. We'll also look at ways to add movement to knitting to avoid stiffness and injuries caused by disuse.
Class is appropriate for students who are comfortable with basic knit and purl stitches. Swatches of basic cable and lace patterns are also made in class. Stitch patterns are provided in both charted and written formats.
Supplies Needed:
- Light colored worsted weight yarn (4 oz./100 g is sufficient) and needles appropriate for yarn
- A bath sized towel
- Materials to take notes
Key Class Details:
- Prerequisites: Class is suitable for all levels of knitting experience. You should be able to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off.
