After several months' hiatus, due in large part to a bit of illness, we're back! Even though our newsletter has been on hold, we haven't been neglecting our spay/neuter and rescue efforts! Below is a rundown of our activity through the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015.
There are a couple of extra-special stories that make all our efforts worthwhile, plus some great photos and videos for your viewing pleasure. As always, we need your donations, however big or small, to continue to pay for neuters and care for our rescues. We have a monthly giving option set up in PayPal, so even $5 a month would be wonderful! Thank you all who have given, and know that your money is well spent with us.
Remember: All donations go directly to vet bills, housing, and food for the dogs we care for. Just click on the PayPal button below to make any donation (even $5 or $10 helps).

The Pet Detective
Around where we live, as in many communities, there are dozens of feral cats running around getting food and water from the people who live here. They have plenty of places to hunker down at night and have pretty good lives all in all.
The problem, of course, is their breeding and multiplying. We've been trapping, neutering, and releasing the ones that hang out around our horse area, and we're almost through the group.
However, one day last week The Pet Detective heard mewling sounds coming from under one of our outbuildings; when she went to investigate, lo and behold, there were four teeny tiny kittens nursing from one of the young females we hadn't neutered yet. We were able to catch them, friendly them up for a few days, and take them to our favorite no-kill shelter.

While we were there, we met Michelle, a mother with two adorable kids who wanted to adopt two kittens. She fell in love with two of these (the gray with the white stripe and one of the dark ones), and she put a hold on them and is picking them up this week!
The kids have already made obstacle courses for the kitties and are over the moon at getting them. The other two will likely be adopted within days. We'll keep you posted.

Another case comes to a happy ending for the Pet Detective!

A Home for Bella?
Little Bella has been running loose for months near our home, and no one could catch her. Our neighbor Elizabeth, who was featured in a past issue when she adopted gorgeous golden Lab Santiago, was finally able to round her up and put her in her back yard, where she had a blast with Elizabeth's other dogs (all huge, but of course she's took charge immediately!).
Because she already has three dogs (the limit allowable here in our area), Elizabeth can't keep Bella, but she found a kindly neighbor who was willing to give this little girl a chance. Bella now has a family of her own!

Rescues of the Month
Cassie
Cassie (originally named Jessie while she lived with us) was found in the desert near our home. She was very scared, shy, and skinny, but she soon warmed up to us and showed herself to be an absolute darling-sweet, friendly, and got along great with our other dogs.
Just by chance, Carolyn was talking to Walt, a friend of one of her clients, who said he and his wife Bev had an old Lab who was probably in her last years, and they wanted a young dog to keep her company and fill the hole she would leave.
We brought Jessie to meet Bev (left) and her neighbor Laura, who live on gorgeous horse property in Leona Valley. It was love at first sight, and Jessie, now named Cassie, has a fabulous home with acres and acres to run and Laura's young female Lab to play with, which we understand they do all day long.
It couldn't have happened to a nicer dog!!

More Colony Kitties
Two other colony kitties rescued from under our neighbor's storage unit; we took them to our fabulous vet, High Desert Animal Care in Palmdale, where they were put in the adoption area and had new homes within days!
| Tiny This tiny little Aussie was picked up by Ashley, our neighbor and helper, weighing about 3 pounds. He was dirty and skinny, but good-tempered. We put him up on RescueMe.org and almost instantly had a lovely young lady from Northern California drive all the way down to us to pick him up.
She fell totally in love at first sight, and was thrilled to be driving home with him, where he'll have lots of love and companionship with her other little doggie.
MikeyMikey is a Maine Coon Cat mix who was found wandering the streets around our house, obviously someone's cat because he came right up to us. He's one of the most gorgeous cats we've ever seen, and we found a home for him almost immediately. He now has the run of his house, where he's the benevolent dictator! |
