HAPPY FALL!

Lots going on this season, with puppies galore, rescues aplenty, and spay/neuters going strong.

Also, and thank you Raizy Goffman for turning us on to this, we're now registered as a charity on AmazonSmile. By shopping on Amazon Smile exactly as you would on regular Amazon, .5% of the price of items purchased is donated to your favorite charity (which we hope would be SNIP!). Details are below. It's really easy to set yourself up, and costs you nothing.

We've done something a little different with our photo gallery this issue. Twisted Sifter (one of our favorite photo sites) is doing their 100 Best Photos of the Year contest, and we found some amazing photos on their site that we want to share. There are many more, but these are our favorites.

As always, we need your donations, however big or small, to continue to pay for neuters and care for our rescues. We have a monthly giving option set up in PayPal, so even $5 a month would be wonderful! Thank you all who have given, and know that your money is well spent with us.

Remember: All donations go directly to vet bills, housing, and food for the dogs we care for. Just click on the PayPal button below to make any donation
(even $5 or $10 helps).

AmazonSmile Program

The easiest way to donate to SNIP

We've just enrolled in the AmazonSmile program, which is Amazon's way of letting people donate to their favorite charity while shopping as usual.

Just click here to go to the following screen:

Enter your Amazon log in, or select "create an account." Follow any instructions, and you're done! Now when you shop through AmazonSmile they'll donate .5% of your purchase price to SNIP (which is, of course, your favorite charity!).

If the above link doesn't work for some reason, go to AmazonSmile, and follow their easy instructions to set up. When asked for the charity name,

type in "spay/neuter implementation program snip" to select us.

Thank you for supporting us and the animals!

Mama and the Four Graces

A story unfolding in the desert with no good end in sight . . . until Pet Detective Carolyn Culligan took on one of her most heart-warming cases.

Longview is a lonely desert road connecting two busy routes in and out of Lake Los Angeles. A few dilapidated properties dot the road, and several dirt roads lead to shacks and trailers, some abandoned and some with people living off the grid. It is a popular commute and especially dangerous for stray dogs. It is also a popular dumping ground for unwanted dogs, and Carolyn has picked up five dogs in the past on that stretch of road.

Several weeks ago, she spotted a Shepherd mix and four tiny puppies foraging for food in a pile of trash. When she stopped, they all went scurrying across the road and down a dirt path. she watched them crawl under a chain link fence that surrounded what looked like an abandoned property. A storage trailer and outbuildings provided a safe place for the family against the elements and desert animals.

The puppies appeared to be about 5 weeks old and acted as though they had never seen a human. Carolyn was unable to catch any of them, so she pushed food and water under the fence. They were all very hungry. It didn't look like the mom was still nursing.

Mama and pups in our front yard

Long story short, patience paid off. After feeding the family twice a day for a week, Carolyn and Susan were able to get them all back to SNIP headquarters (our house). Mom came around right away. She had obviously been someone's dog. It took 10 days to get the puppies used to humans and acting like puppies.

Faith, Hope, and Charity
Mr. Moriarity
We called the mama Mama (it just fit her) and the puppies (three girls and one boy) the Four Graces: Faith, Hope, and Charity and Mr. Moriarity. We fell so in love with Mama, who is one of the sweetest dogs we've ever known, that it was very very hard to let her go to a new home; but we're delighted to report that she and all her babies have been adopted and looking forward to great lives with their respective families.

Another case comes to a happy ending for the Pet Detective!

Looking for Love!

The five dogs here were all abandoned by their owners when they moved away. Kindly neighbors were feeding them, but when one of the females had puppies, they called us for help.

Shirley and Shorty

Shirley
Shirley is the mother of the two pups below. She and her brother Shorty are probably Jack Russell mixes. Shorty has really short legs that make him really cute. They weigh about 15 lbs. each and are friendly and playful.

Pearl and Tux

The two surviving puppies, who we named Pearl and Tux, were starving when we got them.

Tux-what a difference some groceries make!

If you or someone you know has room in their home and heart for one of these cuties, please let us know!

Layla
Layla before

This little kitten was found wandering in our neighbor's yard, blind from eye infections, tiny and starving. They brought her right over, and we got her to the vet immediately and started her on treatment and food.

The vet thinks she's a Himalayan, so we named her Layla. Here she with with her eyes cleared up and looking like an actual cat

Here's Layla during a visit with Suzy, the neighbor who found her. What a difference!

If you would like to adopt Layla, please
email us.

Ricky
Ricky's huge growth
Poor Ricky, owned by one of our neighbors, has a salivary pocket on his throat that would fill up with fluid within weeks of being drained and ultimately prevent him from eating. The owners were told by one vet that they should have the salivary gland removed, a dangerous surgery that would cost around $900. We took Ricky to Dr. Lindsey Tate at High Desert, who strongly advised against this surgery for safety reasons. She suggested an inexpensive-and much safer alternative, which was to lance it whenever it filled up, something they're training the owner to do on her own!

Arraya

This lovely young Shepherd wandered into The Feed Store up the road from us and looked like she planned to stay. Karen, the owner, wanted to keep her. Unfortunately, the dogs next store disagreed, and it caused such a continuing ruckus that she asked us to help find her a home. We got her into our favorite no-kill shelter, where she will probably be adopted immediately, being a pure-bred Shepherd and quite beautiful. Updates next issue!
