SPRING IS HERE!
Puppies Are Everywhere!
Puppies and neuters and rescues- Oh my!. We have a very special plea for help on a young female from our "desert dog" family (see Emmy's Tale, below). If you or (someone you know) are able to foster her until she's used to humans and ready for adoption, you will earn a special place in Heaven. This month we have a nifty and cheap idea for your male dogs who see house-training as more of a suggestion than a rule. That said, enjoy this issue! Please watch the videos; they will make you laugh and maybe cry a little. As always, we need your donations, however big or small, to continue to pay for neuters and care for our rescues. We have a monthly giving option set up in PayPay, so even $5 a month would be wonderful! Thank you all who have given, and know that your money is well spent with us.
Remember: All donations go directly to vet bills, housing, and food for the dogs we care for. Just click on the PayPal button below to make any donation (even $5 or $10 helps).

Emmy's Tale Other dogs, fine. Humans, not so much
If you've been following our newsletter, you know we've been feeding a family of "desert dogs" for quite awhile. Of the 13 original dogs, we've placed 9 in homes, and we've spayed the three remaining females, although we could never catch the male.
The youngest of the remaining dogs was not being allowed to eat enough by the others, and she was starving. We were able to catch her recently, and we figured she would get used to us soon and we could get her into one of our adoption programs.
Well, no such luck. She's very feral, and although she will take food from our hands, she won't let us touch her unless she's in an enclosed space where she can't get away. This is not getting better.
She's so pretty we know she'd get a home if she were friendlier. We really bit off more than we could chew when we took her. She's great with our other dogs, but simply doesn't trust humans. We very much need to find a person, preferably with some experience with difficult dogs, to foster her until she is okay with humans. Then we can work at finding her a home. If you think you can work with Emmy to get her ready for adoption, PLEASE let us know. Email Susan and we'll talk. |
Spays of the Month
Lots of activity in April! We did a record number of spays and rescued yet another litter of puppies and several other young dogs.
Evelyn's Babies
 | Cute enough for you? |
Evelyn is our lovely mail lady, and a real animal lover. She needed to get these three adorable little ladies spayed, and with the tremendous generosity of Dr. Alexander Taub of House Call Vet LA, we were able to help her. Dr. Taub held a low-cost spay/neuter event here in Lake LA in the name of OccuPuppy, and when we contacted him about SNIP and the dogs we wanted to spay, he was so sympathetic that we were able to work out a payment that we could afford, and spayed all three of Evelyn's dogs, plus two from a neighbor (one of which is the Mom of the puppies below). We wouldn't have been able to help these dogs and their owners without his generous support. Thank You Dr. Taub! Family girl

Hoops is another adorable little girl; here she is with Maria and her kids. |
The Pet Detective
More Puppy Patrol!
The Pet Detective found out that the other female owned by the neighbor whose puppies we found homes for last month had another pregnant female! So off we went to gather them up when they were old enough, and we were able to get them adopted within days.

Does your male dog pee inside? An inexpensive solutionWe have several male rescues who have never quite gotten the message that they're not to pee in the house. We've tried a bunch of expensive "doggie diapers," and finally came up with a really cheap version Carolyn owns Old Canyon Farm, a horse training facility, and has lots of polo wraps. We cut them to size, and for our little dogs they fit perfectly around their "important" area. For the bigger dogs we use the velcro strips to attach two or more together to just the right size. If they need to be wider, you can sew them together side by side. We buy the huge bags of sanitary napkins (the ones for humans are way cheaper than the ones for dogs, go figure) and we're all set! No more pee on your furniture! |
