Happy Holidays!

Please remember us this Holiday Season.

We spay and neuter on a weekly basis, out of our own pockets, and we depend solely on your donations to continue our rescue work.

At this time of year we see so many dogs that have been given as presents and then abandoned when they become too much trouble. Help us get them neutered and into good homes!

If you give to charity at this time of year, please include us in your giving. All donations go directly to vet bills and food for the desert dogs we care for.

Just click on the PayPal button below to make any donation (even $5 or $10 helps!). Make this a happy holiday for all.

New Friends! In our ongoing outreach to other animal rescue groups, we have recently added these resources to our list of friends.

AnimalSource.com
This is a terrific go-to site for rescue and other animal-related services throughout the LA area.

Awesome folks running weekly adoption events at the local PetSmart, they foster, provide shots, and give terrific advice and wisdom from their extensive experience in rescuing and placing animals in need. Here's their mission statement: "To rescue, provide needed shots and medical attention, a safe temporary home with shelter, food, and water, spay/neuter, and finally to adopt out to a loving forever home."

LA Animal Services
Very interesting message from these folks, indicating that LA Animal Control is getting on board with the No-Kill philosophy. Here's what they say: "In the first 10 months of 2013, we have significantly surpassed our life-saving goal with over 4,300 fewer shelter deaths than in 2012! In addition, more great shelter pets are in homes of their own and, thanks to focused spay/neuter programs, the number of animals needing shelter is reducing. [This is] a giant step toward achieving No-Kill in Los Angeles."

Neuter of the Month
TeeTee--Happy and Sad

Carolyn was driving along Palmdale Avenue recently when she saw a sign saying "Free Pupie," and she decided to stop and see what was up. The homeowner's husky mix, TeeTee, had had a litter of nine puppies by the blue-nose pit bull that lived at the house. Three of the pups had already been given away, and Carolyn rushed home to get crates to bring the other six skinny little guys to our house.
Six sweet but doomed puppies

We fattened them up for several days, then got them to our favorite shelter, but later that day they called to say all the puppies had parvo and had to be euthanized! This was terrible news, as they were simply adorable and would have been adopted immediately.

TeeTee two weeks after spaying--healthy and puppy-free
We had TeeTee checked out by the vet and spayed, as she showed no symptoms of parvo. This is not unusual; puppies and very old dogs are most susceptible to parvo. But the property was obviously infected with the parvo virus, which stays virulent for up to a year. We kept Chica overnight to keep her clean and quiet, then returned her to her owner.

It's heartbreaking to lose such adorable pups, but not every story has a happy ending. Just another reason to keep working as hard as we can to get people to spay and neuter. At least Chica won't be having more litters in an environment that would mean certain death to them.

Rescue of the Month
Roscoe

Roscoe and owner
Bruce Gilbert

Roscoe
is one of the puppies from the Challenger School rescue (featured in the August issue). He was called Danny and was sick but has recovered well. He's found a terrific home with Bruce Gilbert, owner of Balanced Fitness LA, specializing in fitness training for adults 40 and up.

And it's only "fitting" that he created a program called the "Bow Wow Workout," where folks can get a terrific workout with their dogs! You can see a video of the training session by clicking the link above.

Bruce reports, "Roscoe is doing very well and is making human friends and a few safe, select dogs of friends and neighbors."

Many thanks to Lisa and Lauren Fidelibus for making this happen.
Pepsi Update

Last issue's Rescue of the Month was this beautiful boxer mix, Pepsi. We are thrilled to report that she has been adopted through our new friends Halfway to Home. We're so grateful to Diane Alarcon for rescuing and fostering Pepsi until she could find her forever home.

Well fed and happy with her two foster "brothers"

Neighborhood Watch
Bear and Blue--This story does have a happy ending!

One of our neighbors owned two English Mastiffs, and recently he stopped making sure they were confined properly. They would wander around the neighborhood causing uproar and commotion with all the dogs on our street. We tried contacting him, but his number was no longer working and he never responded to the notes we left on his door.

Bear
Blue
One of our neighbors called Lancaster Animal Control when the mastiffs were loose, and they were taken to the Lancaster Shelter.

Bearwas adopted (yeah!), but Blue is still at the shelter. Susan got on the computer and found Big Dogs Rescue, a large breed rescue in Palmdale, and their rescue coordinator (appropriately named Angel) said they would take Blue any time. As soon as she has been given her temperament test (the shelter won't release any large "aggressive" breed without this), Susan will bring her over to Angel.

Thank heaven for such great local rescue groups. It just goes to show how people can work together to save these wonderful souls!

Saying Goodbye
Tyrone

It's always sad to say goodbye to an old friend. Tyrone lived with Carolyn since her days in Newhall (at least 14 years). She got him as a tiny puppy, and he grew into an 80-pound walking carpet.

Tyrone always had issues, but he was also sweet and lovable. He and Susan bonded closely when she moved in with Carolyn in 2011, and he kept us laughing ever since. When a long-time tumor blew up and started bleeding, we realized it was time for him to go to heaven. We know he's with his buddies that have passed over, and is playing like a puppy and has no more pain.

Here are some photos of Tyrone on his walks in the desert, where he used to find wonderful prizes that he carried home.

We miss you, buddy!

This photo was taken at an explosion in China, where a monkey rescued this puppy by carrying it out of the building to safety. Amazing!

Giving new meaning to the term "Bed and Breakfast"

Oh, and you've never woken up with your head stuck in a bowl of food?

I know she's big and white and hairy and has no feathers.
And your point is?

I'll never leave you

It's all we really want, isn't it?

About SNIP

SNIP is a 501(c)(3) promoting the spay/neuter of domestic pets in Lake Los Angeles and Littlerock in Southern California.

Our service is unique in that we pick up pet from the owner, take it to the vet for surgery, and either return it to the owner or find it a home. SNIP bears the entire cost of the neuter.

We rely on the expert assistance of High Desert Animal Care and the Littlerock Pet Clinic, and donations from pet lovers who know the vital importance of keeping pet population under control so pets are not abandoned in the desert or neglected and mistreated at home.

SNIP recently became a member of NKLA (No-Kill Los Angeles), a Best Friends' initiative, and we work with FixNation in Trap/Neuter/Return of feral cats.

We want all pets to be lovingly cared for!
