Greetings!

Carolyn and Susan
The other day, Susan had gone to our local school to leave food and water for two strays we had been keeping an eye on, when Gina Corn, a psychologist at the school, saw her and stopped. Gina was thankful that we were watching out for the dogs, whom she and some of the other workers at the school were also feeding. Not only that, she gave us a $60 donation toward food for them! There are truly wonderful people in our area, animal lovers who do what they can. Such people keep our spirits strong.

The importance of donations can't be overstated. No one likes to ask for money, and yet without donations from our wonderful friends and clients, we couldn't carry on our spay/neuter mission. Please know that any donation helps--$1, $5, $10 or more. $10 will feed a dog for a week or more, and $60 will pay for one spay or neuter. It's easy to donate through PayPal (see button at right); it's secure and you don't need a PayPal account--just press the button and follow the instructions.

And it's not just money--donations of food are most welcome! We go through at least 40 pounds of dry food a week for our "desert dogs" (ones we feed but can't catch), not to mention the ones we have waiting for adoption. A bag of food or a PetSmart gift card is a perfect way to help. (Instructions are at the right under the PayPal button.)

That being said, please enjoy this issue of SNIPpets. Sharing with you a positive attitude and the willingness to expend energy and love to our four-legged best friends is the path to success!

And don't miss the adorable video "Sleepy Time"
(click here or on the link in the upper right corner). Sent to us by Raizy Goffman, owner of Camelot Riding Club.)

Please use this button to forward SNIPpets to friends. Our goal is to build a strong community of pet lovers to help us find homes for unwanted pets and to manage the population of dogs and cats in our area by providing funds and transportation for spay and neuter.

Timmy and Reese

Timmy and Reese with Carolyn
Last year on her way to a horse show at Camelot in Newhall, Carolyn saw two starving dogs lying by the side of the road. One was in such bad shape that he couldn't even lift his head. She picked him up and put him in the back seat of her truck; the other dog was easily coaxed into the truck, and she headed off to the show.

Camelot's owner, Raizy Goffman, let the dogs stay in an empty stall for the day. They were exhausted, starving, and dehydrated. The Akita was in bad shape but able to walk, eat, and drink. The collie mix had to be helped to his feet to get to water.

The next day we took them to High Desert Animal Care, where they were weighed and examined. We named the collie mix Timmy; the vet said that he was probably just hours from death when Carolyn found him. Here's a photo of Timmy at Camelot the day Carolyn picked him up.

The other, a beautiful Japanese Akita who we named Reese, was terribly skinny but in a little better shape. We brought them home for some TLC, and within two weeks they had put on weight and were strong enough to be neutered. Then they were ready for us to find them homes.

Reese was the easy one. We contacted Akita Angels, run by
Christine Burton. She fostered
Reese for a few days, then Susan drove her to A Passion for Paws, a highly impressive Akita rescue in Romoland. Volunteers Cheryl Weatherford, Lysette Tidwell, and Tyler Tellez arranged for Reese's stay at the shelter, and she was immediately adopted.

Timmy was another story. He had formed such a strong bond with Carolyn that we decided to keep him. If you read last month's issue, you know that Timmy is now Blossom's "bf"; he sleeps in Carolyn's room and is very content as part of our family.

From Under the House to the Lap(s) of Luxury!

In last month's Pet Detective, we featured a litter of puppies who Carolyn hauled out from under a neighbor's house. Lisa and Lauren Fidelibus found homes for all the puppies and have remained in touch with many of the adoptive parents.

Rescue of the Month

Anna and the King

Siamese kitties
One of our neighbors found these gorgeous Siamese kittens in his back yard. He later saw what he assumed was the mother dead by the side of the road, probably hit by a car.

He was afraid his dog would kill them, so he called Susan and asked if she could help him find them homes.

They were quite scared of humans and we couldn't catch them, but after feeding and watering them for a few days, Susan was able to handle them, and they turned out to be sweetness itself. We named the female Anna and the male King.

We were able to get them into our favorite no-kill shelter, where they were adopted before being on the website for a day!

On the Case!

Sixteen Puppies!

More of 16 puppy litter
Rest of 16 puppy litters
Always on the prowl for dogs in need, Carolyn, our intrepid Pet Detective, noticed a rundown yard filled with junk and lots of tiny puppies! Upon investigation, she met a well-meaning old man who told her he had taken in two stray females some months back; both had just given birth to litters of eight puppies!

The puppies were very young, but the situation was too dangerous to leave them there. Carolyn loaded the 16 puppies into carriers and took them to Lisa and Lauren Fidelibus, who have helped us with so many puppy placements. They nursed the puppies along until they were old enough to be adopted. They placed 14 of the 16 puppies, keeping two they couldn't bear to give up.

Carolyn arranged for the two moms to be spayed, then returned them to their yard, where the old guy still feeds and cares for them.

About SNIP

Spay/Neuter Implementation Program (SNIP)
is a 501(c)(3) corporation promoting the spay and neuter of domestic pets in Lake Los Angeles and Littlerock in Southern California. We provide a unique service in that we pick up pets from the owners, take them to the vet for neutering, and return them if the owner is able to care for them; if not, we find them homes. SNIP bears the entire cost of the spay or neuter.

We rely on the expert assistance given by High Desert Animal Care/ Littlerock Pet Clinic and donations from pet lovers who understand the vital importance of keeping pet population under control so pets are not abandoned in the desert or neglected and mistreated at home. We also work with FixNation in the Trap/Neuter/Return of feral cats.

We want all pets to be wanted, cherished, and lovingly cared for!
