 Dear Neighbor,

I hope this email finds you well and ready to celebrate another great 4th of July!  I'll be marching in the Lake Bluff parade this year, and hope to see you there.  There are many other parades and celebrations happening throughout Lake County, from festivals, parades, concerts, and fireworks.  Click here to view a list of activities for this weekend, including the Naval Station Great Lakes Fourth of July Celebration, taking place Thursday, 7/3-Friday, 7/4.

Your Forest Preserves offer many great opportunities to get outside this summer, including free concerts at Independence Grove, Civil War Days at Lakewood, the Green Youth Farmers Market, as well as our many trails and bike paths.  Please see below for more information.

There are many things that are in the works in your Forest Preserves and at the county.  I've included some short stories on just a few of them that I thought you might find interesting.  As always, thank you for taking the time to read my newsletter, and I appreciate your emails letting me know your thoughts.  Please don't hesitate to contact me with your concerns, interests and ideas.

Oriole Grove

I continue to work on ensuring that Oriole Grove (jointly owned by Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Lake County Forest Preserves), remains protected.  This beautiful 84 acre parcel, located between Lake Bluff Open Lands and Lake Forest Open Lands along the Skokie River,  is a critical ecological link between these two sites, and the Forest Preserve recognizes the significance of restoring and preserving this important property.

Civil War Days, July 12 & 13
The boom of cannons, the crack of rifles, the galloping of horse hooves welcomes you at the annual Civil War Days encampment, Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13, at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda. Wander the camps to see soldiers, civilians and tradesmen at work. Watch as union and confederate forces collide in battle and then visit the 1863 Summer Fair to meet President Lincoln and shop Civil War era vendors. Kids will love the crafts, games and a scavenger hunt.

Lake County Achieving Efficiencies through Shared Services

Lake County is focusing more on opportunities to share services, eliminate duplication, and simply be more efficient. Just this month, the County Board approved a number of items that advance this initiative, including a new contract to provide police services and working with other governments to cooperatively purchase goods. Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor explains and shares more examples in this short video.
