Free Informational Sessions on Property Assessment Appeals

Dear Resident,

Homeowners should now have received their blue assessment notices in the mail.  If you believe your home is over-assessed, you can file an appeal.  Due to recent rule changes at the Board of Review, homeowners must appeal the assessment themselves or retain an attorney.

In light of this change, I am holding free sessions to help homeowners understand how to evaluate their property tax assessment notice and file an online appeal:

  • August 22, 9:00 a.m. at the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Center,                                                                       100 East Old Mill Road, Lake Forest
  • August 22, 7:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Building,                                                                                               45 East Center Ave., Lake Bluff
  • September 9, 9:00 a.m. at the Heather Ridge Clubhouse,                                                                                          5900 Heather Ridge Drive, Gurnee
  • September 9, 7:00 p.m. at the Warren-Newport Library, Meeting Room B,                                                               224 North O'Plaine Road, Gurnee
At these sessions, we will:
  • evaluate an individual property, detailing how to verify the characteristics used to determine property assessments;
  • show how to find comparable sales
  • demonstrate how to use the on-line appeal form

If you do choose to appeal your assessment, the last filing date is:
  • Shields Township:           September 3
  • Waukegan Township:     September 16
  • Warren Township:          September 19
  • Libertyville Township:      September 23
The Chief County Assessor's Office is holding Help Centers in Vernon Hills and Grayslake to provide one-on-one assistance in evaluating property assessments.  For dates and locations, please click here.

As always, if you have any questions about this or anything concerning Lake County government or the Forest Preserves, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thank you,
