Introducing the ACE Research Talks:
Share your research, win $500!

The Center for Undergraduate Research is excited to announce a new program designed to promote the visibility of high-quality research undertaken by KU undergraduates.  Co-sponsored by the University Honors Program's James K. Hitt Awards, the A.C.E. Research Talks will highlight student researchers who are able to make their projects:

A: Accessible
C: Creative
E: Engaging

Recipients of the awards will receive $500 and present their research at one of two special sessions at KU's Undergraduate Research Symposium to be held on April 26.  Similar to a 3-minute thesis or a TED talk, the idea behind the ACE Research Talks is to present high-quality research in a way that is accessible and engaging to a general audience.  We all know that undergraduate researchers at KU do amazing work; now it's time to put that work in an accessible format so other students, the general public, and proud parents can understand the important work that students do!

To apply to give an ACE Research Talk, students should fill out the normal registration form for the Symposium, including an abstract.  In addition, students applying to give an ACE talk should upload a 3 minute video of themselves explaining their project along with the Symposium registration.   This video should be made with a broad audience in mind: avoid jargon and make sure to touch on what makes your research exciting.

Applications to give an ACE Research Talk are due March 26, 2014.

Undergraduate researchers
visit Topeka

On February 12, ten KU undergraduate researchers joined their peers from other Kansas Board of Regents public universities in Topeka to present their research to legislators and the general public. This was the second annual Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol. The event was started last year in an effort to highlight the unique opportunities undergraduate students have to participate in research with faculty members at Kansas universities.  As seen in the photo above, Provost Jeff Vitter and Senior Vice Provost Sara Rosen visited with students during the event.

Prepare your summer & fall Undergraduate Research Award applications now!

We're currently accepting applications for students interested in applying for Undergraduate Research Awards (UGRAs) for the Summer and Fall 2014 semesters.  These awards provide support for original, independent research, scholarship, or creative work by Lawrence-campus undergraduates, under the general guidance of a member of the faculty.  Each recipient will receive $1,000, and applications are due March 28, 2014.

Our staff is ready to help you prepare your UGRA applications, which include a four-page research proposal and a reference from a faculty mentor.  We'll be facilitating two types of workshops to help you prepare your proposal:

Information sessions:

In these sessions, we'll talk about the details of the application and proposal, answer questions, and do hands-on activities to help you get started writing your proposal.  Students should come prepared to discuss ideas and plan their proposals.

Dates:

    • February 25th, 2014, 2-3pm, Centennial Room of Kansas Union
    • February 28th, 2014, 1-2pm, Malott Room of Kansas Union

Proposal Workshops:

In these sessions, we'll work with fellow students and Center staff to revise everyone's research proposals.  Students should bring a copy of your proposal and come ready to work with your peers.

Dates:

    • March 24th, 2014, 2-3pm, Alderson Auditorium of Kansas Union
    • March 26th, 2014, 11am-12pm, Alderson Auditorium of Kansas Union
