Oakwood President's Leadership Tour

This past weekend, President Pollard, along with a group of student leaders of Oakwood, spent time in Washington, DC. This annual trip, called the President's Leadership Tour, allows for Dr. Pollard to speak to the students about the impact of their leadership on the campus.

During the tour, they were able to visit several monuments and historic sites including the new National Museum of African American History & Culture, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the United States Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument and Reflecting Pool.

The Administration would like to give a special thank you to Leroy and Lois Peters, friends of Oakwood University, who hosted all of the 24 students and their chaperones for the Leadership Tour.

Loma Linda Health Visits Oakwood's School of Business
by Andrew Taylor, School of Business, accounting major

David Conkerite, '11
Oakwood alumni David Conkerite, 11, and Edward Pelote, II, '14, returned to Oakwood recently, this time representing Loma Linda University Health. David is the Program Manager for the Department of Human Resources and Edward is a management resident, and they visited Oakwood University's School of Business for Loma Linda's annual information and interview sessions.

On arrival at the interest meeting, the Loma Linda representatives greeted the students with smiles, and prizes that could only be obtained at the meeting, which is always held the day before the scheduled interviews.

Edward Pelote, II, '14
Important information was disseminated to the students to help them decide if Loma Linda was the place for the expansion of their career. Included was information on internships, the Loma Linda Vision 2020 plan, the size and growth of their network, and much more. Food was provided by "Nothing but Noodles" to enhance the engagement.

Before their arrival, students had signed-up for an interview slot to improve their chances of obtaining an internship. Twenty-one students interviewed in total for various internship opportunities, allowing them to gain valuable interview experience and connections.

We are always excited to have corporations interested in Oakwood University students. Additionally we are proud to see Oakwood graduates succeeding in the workplace and coming back to invest their time and energy in their alma mater.

yellow_researcher_portrait.jpg On the evening of October 24, almost 150 elementary, middle and high schools students and their chaperones/guardians arrived at Oakwood University's Department of Chemistry for an evening of scientific discovery during the university's Chemistry Night.

All activities took place in the Chemistry lab in the Cooper Science Complex. Students had the opportunity to participate in fascinating hands-on experiments that brought textbook learning to life.

Chemistry Night is an annual, free of charge event sponsored by Oakwood University's Chemistry Department, and is open to students of all ages in Huntsville and Madison County.
Student Spotlight: Doxa - "What God Ordains Can Only be Blessed"
by Jeffrey Wilder, student writer

Over its 120 year history, Oakwood University has become known for its talented musicians. Whether it comes in the form of an instrumentalist, soloist, or a group, musical talent is not something our student body lacks.

One such group has surfaced with a mission to create a resurgence of positivity throughout the student body. Giving God glory through the musical gifts He has bestowed upon them has become their main purpose. Since its inception on April 9, 2013, the group Doxa has taken this campus by storm, and have proven in a short time that what God ordains can only be blessed.

Doxa performs around campus at various events and services. They can also be seen campus praying with students and getting involved with the community. They have also recently taken on the task of fundraising to release an extended play (Ep) recording in the near future. All in all, they have proven that they are more than just the harmonies they sing, but ministers in winning souls for Jesus.
DOXA members are (l-r): Daniele Cornwall, Kiera Yankson, Barbara Jackson, Christian Sawyers, Joshua Southwell, Esther Alexis, Marcus Harris, and Alanna Aurelien.

This week I had the privilege of attending the annual conference conducted by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C. During this celebration of National HBCU week, I was able to meet with many government and HBCU officials including Dr. Kim Hunter Reed (left), Deputy Undersecretary for the US Department of Education and the Acting Executive Director for the White House Initiative on HBCUs.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established by an Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. The Museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, as the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution. This was one of the stops on President Pollard's Leadership Tour 2016.
