Oakwood's School of Arts & Sciences Kicks Off School Year
by Cherryl A. Galley, Ph.D., Dean, School of Arts & Sciences
On August 10, the School of Arts and Sciences had its first all-faculty and staff meeting for the 2016/2017 academic year under the leadership of Dr. Cherryl Galley, Dean. What a great opportunity it was to see familiar faces and welcome first-timers to the University!
After a moving devotion by Elder T. Marshall Kelly, chairpersons from each of the seven departments introduced new and returning faculty members and gave a bird's-eye view of their goals for the new year. Chairpersons in the School are:
Dr. Juliet Penrod | Biology | Dr. Kenneth LaiHing | Chemistry | Dr. Rennae Elliott | Communication | Dr. Benson Prigg | English & Foreign Languages | Dr. Jason Ferdinand | Music | Dr. Martin Hodnett | Psychological Sciences | Dr. Lisa James | Mathematics & Computer Science |
Recognition was given to those who conducted summer research. Others had traveled during the summer, and all enjoyed some well-deserved relaxation. Prayer was offered for the spiritual oversight of Institution, for the consecration of faculty and staff in each department, and for the incoming student body.

Voter Registration Drive Scheduled
On August 25, Oakwood University has scheduled a voter registration drive at Blake Center. In order to vote in the historic presidential election in November, it is crucial that first-time voters, and those who are racial minorities, verify that they are registered to vote well ahead of any local, state or national election. State voter registration deadlines vary.
Assistant Professor of Public Policy Preston Foster emphasized the importance of voting, by quoting Franklin D. Roosevelt: "Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting."
