Oakwood Hosts Summer Enrichment Program

Ray Saunders, coordinator for NACEE's Educational Talent Search program, teaches middle school History during the summer program.

Oakwood University is the venue for the summer enrichment component of the North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence's Educational Talent Search (ETS)which identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. Classes for middle school students include English, Math, History, and Life Skills. Classes for high school students are ACT and College Prep courses. Approximately 160 students are participating in this summer's program. For the past 10 years, the ETS summer program has been hosted on Oakwood's campus.

The program provides academic, career, and financial aid counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to the postsecondary school of their choice. ETS also serves high school dropouts by encouraging them to reenter the educational system and complete their education. The program serves 1,045 eligible participants enrolled in target schools: one middle school, one junior high school and three high schools in the Huntsville City School District, eleven schools in the Jackson County School District, and two schools in the city of Scottsboro. During the school year, NACEE brings high school students to Oakwood's campus for classroom observation in the math and science disciplines. Mentoring, science and chemistry lab observation are conducted throughout the academic year. Students are served from non-target schools during after-school academic tutoring and the summer component.

NACEE, a nonprofit educational support center funded by the U.S. Department of Education, was established over 42 years ago to provide pre-college programs for youth and adults in Alabama's Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan and Winston counties. NACEE provides services that remove barriers to postsecondary education, including academic assessments, career inventories, financial aid assistance, college admission assistance, tutoring, ACT prep, High School Graduation Exam prep, and many others.

On March 24, 2016, at the 38th Annual UNCF Gala, NACEE, and its Executive Director/President Earnest Davis, Ed.D., was recognized for its outstanding contribution to education institutions. Oakwood is proud of its relationship with NACEE.

Outdoor temperatures weren't the only things turning 100 in Huntsville last week. More than 400 family members, colleagues, former students, and friends gathered at the Oakwood Adventist Academy auditorium to celebrate the 100th birthday of Dr. Ernest E. Rogers, '41, on June 25, 2016. It is reasonable to calculate that, during his more than 50 years of full time service as professor and pastor between the mid-1940s to the early 1980s, Dr. Rogers was involved with the training of 90% or more of all ministers in the Regional Conferences of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In honor of his milestone, Dr. Rogers is requesting your help in contributing to the School of Religion at Oakwood University. Your gift will provide funds to equip the School of Religion study lab and classroom with technology needed to maximize experiences for students training for the ministry. When making your contribution online, in the "notes" section, write in E.E. Rogers' birthday/School of Religion.
