Oakwood Approved to Offer Distance Education

Oakwood University has been approved to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. NC-SARA is a voluntary, regional approach to state oversight of postsecondary distance education. The SARA agreement allows students to take online courses in a variety of states. According to Oakwood University President, Dr. Leslie Pollard, "We cannot overstate the significance of Oakwood's receipt of approval to participate in NC-SARA. Our team of online leaders have been working and praying for this approval. This new footprint expands our ability to deliver our educational products to the broadest possible audiences within the United States."

Students in the following states are now eligible to take online classes at Oakwood University: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. "NC-SARA allows Oakwood University to make its academic programs more widely available through Oakwood Online University," said Karen Benn-Marshall, Ed.D., vice president for Academic Administration.

All institutions that are a part of the SARA initiative are governed to make sure the courses and programs offered are high-quality opportunities that can help students reach their goals. SARA is overseen by a National Council and administered by four regional education compacts.

Oakwoodites Connected to Hollywood Film

Members of the family of Anna Knight have various roles in the upcoming film, "Free State of Jones," starring Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey.

The movie is inspired by the life of Newton Knight, a poor, defiant farmer from Mississippi, who led an armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi, during the American Civil War. After the rebellion, Knight established a mixed-race community. His relationship with an African-American named Georgiana resulted in the birth of Anna Knight, who was the first Black female of any denomination to serve as a missionary to India. She was trained as a nurse at the Battle Creek Sanitarium.

The film is scheduled to be released in the U.S. this weekend. Newton Knight's descendants, Dorothy Knight Marsh, Florence Knight Blaylock, and Olga Watts Nelson, are extras in the film, seated on the front row of the balcony in the courtroom scene.

Anna Knight is well-known for her contributions to education, including her many years of service to Oakwood and the cause of education. Oakwood's Education Department is housed in Anna Knight Hall, and the Anna Knight Center for Women's Leadership opened on March 27, 2016 (relatives of Anna Knight pictured above).

For general thoracic surgeon Melanie Edwards, MD, '97, the chance to return to her training grounds at Saint Louis University (in Orlando, Florida,) two years ago was a welcomed opportunity. "I knew this would be a place where I could practice the type of surgery that I think is important to patients," said Edwards, an assistant professor of surgery and a SLUCare Cardiothoracic Surgeon. "I have great mentors at SLU, so I was really excited to come back," she said. This is a great place to work." Born in Alberta, Canada, to Jamaican parents, she spent most of her youth in Jamaica before heading to the United States for college in 1993. Edwards earned an undergraduate degree from Oakwood College then went on to attend Loma Linda School of Medicine in California. MORE
