Thousands Expected for South Central Conference Camp Meeting

The Oakwood University family is preparing to welcome thousands to the campus for the South Central Conference Camp Meeting, June 10-18.

In the Seventh-day Adventist Church, camp meetings are annual convocations for spiritual renewal and fellowship. Oakwood's campus has been the host camp meeting venue for the South Central Conference since 1946.

This year's camp meeting theme, "At The Cross," will be addressed by guest speakers including Dr. Carlton Byrd, Elder Wintley Phipps, Dr. Renee Mobley, Elder Dan Jackson, Dr. Leslie Pollard, Elder Dana Edmond and Elder Ron Smith.

Oakwood Hosts Breathe and Stand Out Health Fair

On May 15, Oakwood University, in partnership with the Breath of Life Ministry and the South Central Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, presented the "Breathe and Stand Out" Health Fair to the Huntsville community.

The event was held at the McKee Business and Technology Complex, where community residents enjoyed healthy cooking demonstrations and food tastings, participated in fitness testing, and were provided free health screenings by the Huntsville Hospital Mobile Medical Unit. Games and inflatables were available for children.

"Ministry must reach beyond the four walls of the church," said Oakwood University Church senior pastor Carlton Byrd. "This Breathe and Stand Out Health Fair is our gift to the Huntsville and Northern Alabama area," said Oakwood University President Leslie Pollard. "We want to have a healthy community, as well as a healthy campus," he continued.

Adriana Perera, associate professor of music, recently published an article entitled "Shepherding Artists in the Flock: A Musician's Perspective on Cultivating Creative Community."

She said that "a community that sings is a community that has something to express. As we sing, we transmit our sentiments, beliefs and hopes. We also express our cultural distinctions and peculiarities. It is not surprising that dictatorial governments throughout history have taken measures to silence singers and songs that would question the status quo.
