Oakwood Listed in Top 50 HBCUs

Recently, College Choice ranked Oakwood University as one of the "Top 50 HBCUs." College Choice is an independent online publication dedicated to helping students and their families find the right college. They publish rankings and reviews that make choosing the best college easier, as well as resources to help students get into, pay for, and thrive at the college of their choice. There are 107 HBCUs in the United States, including public and private institutions, community and four-year institutions, medical and law schools.
Oakwood Student Participates in Pre-Law Enrichment Program

Michael Taylor, 2016-2017 United Student Movement Academic Vice and Senior Political Science major has been accepted into the Pre-Law Scholars Summer Enrichment Program (PLSEP) at Howard University School of Law. He is one of 20 students being offered this opportunity at Howard University.
 
PLSEP begins on May 31 and ends on June 25. Congratulations, Michael!
Education Department Receives Re-Accreditation 


The Department of Education at Oakwood University was recently notified that the Selected Improvement Commission of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation has decided to continue the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation at the initial teacher preparation level. This accreditation decision indicates that the education preparation provider and its programs meet rigorous standards set forth by the professional education community. Standards that are accessed by NCATE include 1) Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Dispositions; 2) Assessment System and Unit Evaluation; 3) Field Experiences and Clinical Practice; 4) Diversity; 5) Faculty Qualifications, Performance, and Development; and 6) Unit Governance and Resources.
 
According to the official notification, "special congratulations are in order because the Commission cited no areas for improvement relative to any of the standards."
Oakwood Faculty Published in Award-Winning Journal

Two Oakwood University professors from the Education Department, Deril Wood, Ph.D., and Jeannette R. Dulan, Ph.D., have published an article titled "Inquiry Teaching in Higher Education: A Critical-thinking Context" in The Journal of Adventist Education's February/March 2016 special issue on Critical Thinking and Inquiry. The issue was coordinated by Carol Campbell, Ph.D., associate director of Education at the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. The Journal of Adventist Education� is an award-winning professional journal for Christian teachers, administrators, and others interested in Christian education, K-Higher Education.

Alumni News 

We've already begun hearing back from some of our 2016 graduates alerting us to what they are doing this summer as well as plans for the fall:


Brandi Batten (Psychology Major) will be starting graduate school this fall studying Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Western Carolina University. She was awarded a graduate assistantship. 

In August, Jodel Bernard (Finance and Healthcare Administration Majors) will be a Revenue Cycle Resident at Florida Hospital as part of the Adventist Health System Leadership Development program. 


Aaron Chancy (Ministerial Theology Major) is currently studying to receive a M.Div. from Andrews University in Michigan. His wife,
Sharonda Chancy, (Psychology Major, LEAP) will begin pursuing a Master's Degree in Social Work in August.
Devin Cohen (Biochemistry Major) will begin Pharmacy School at Loma Linda University this September.





Lakeisha Howard
 (Social Work Major) has been granted an Advanced Standing Scholarship and will be pursuing a Master's Degree with a focus in Clinical Social Work at Loma Linda University School of Behavioral Health.

China Jasmin  
(Accounting Major) is an Audit Associate with Wells Fargo in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also a CPA candidate.


Christopher Johnson (Pre-Law/Political Science Major) is participating in a summer internship program with the Democratic National Convention Committee. He is assigned to DNCC's Chief of Staff Office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Jordan Langston
 (Chemistry Major) will be attending the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign to pursue a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.



Kristen Sharp
 (Accounting Major) is interning in the corporate office of LifeWay Christian Resources in their Internal Audit Department in Nashville, Tennessee. In the fall, she plans on beginning graduate school at the University of Alabama Huntsville studying to receive an MBA.
