Oakwood Sounds a Second "CodeRed" for Theology Students

"Tentmakers" was the theme of the second "CodeRed" Conference, held on Oakwood's campus January 17-18. A group of pastors from around the country came to Oakwood to lead an exclusive conference for students of the School of Religion. Titled "CodeRed," the conference provided students preparing for ministry an opportunity to hear from, and dialogue with, pastors in the field about the realities of ministry in contemporary times.

The vision for "CodeRed" originated during conversations held between MyRon Edmonds, D.Min., '99, pastor of the Glenville Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, and Mervyn Warren, D. Min., '57, retired OU religion professor, about the need for interaction between the current students of the Religion and Theology department and pastors in the field. "CodeRed was a clarion call to mentor the next generation of pastors. The presenting pastors came to pour in to, train, and develop would-be and soon-to-be pastors in the area of character development," Edmonds explained.

Service through Greeting Cards

The late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service." On this past Monday, many around the country found themselves reciting or recalling quotes and remembering the legacy of one of the most noted leaders of the civil rights movement. During this day off from academic classes, students of Oakwood University's Pre-Alumni Council made greeting cards for sick and shut-in members of three local Seventh-day Adventist churches. "It was wonderful spreading love by personally making 'get well soon' cards and reflecting on how Dr. King dedicated and lived his life through service and love," said Mariah K. Smith, president of the Pre-Alumni Council.
