Oakwood University Board Meeting Summary
On October 19, members of the Oakwood University Board of Trustees met to discuss and receive reports concerning the growth of the 119-year-old educational institution at its fall Board Meeting. Chaired by Dan Jackson, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America, the Board of Trustees meets twice per year and includes leadership from the Seventh-day Adventist Church's World Headquarters, local conferences, unions, as well as lay members.
Devotional: The meeting began with a devotional message byDaniel L. Honore, JD, president of the Northeastern Conference. He shared with the board members the four instructions God gave Moses in Numbers 20:2-13:
1. Take the rod
- The rod symbolizes the gift of leadership that God has placed in your hands. The rod also represents faith in what God is going to do in your life.
2. Gather the people
- Problems come into our mission when we are divided. God wants His leadership to bring the people together.
3. Speak to the Rock
- Jesus Christ is the Rock of all ages.
4. Drink the water
- If you drink from the Fountain, you will never thirst again.
Recognitions: The Board also recognized several individuals who have served the Board of Trustees and are leaving the Board because of various reasons:
- Sam Green, former president, Southwest Region Conference
- Thomas Lemon, former president, Mid-America Union Conference (current vice president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists)
- Bobby Mitchell, retiring, director of regional affairs, Pacific Union Conference
- Eileen White, educator, current director of education, Nevada Utah Conference
The Board also welcomed the following new members:

- Gary Thurber, president, Mid-America Union Conference
- Calvin Watkins, president, Southwest Region Conference
During the meeting, Leslie N. Pollard, Ph.D., D.Min., MBA, president of Oakwood University, shared the President's Report with the board members. University faculty and staff will educate the students to be healthy through eight laws of health - sunlight, temperance, adequate rest, nutrition, drink water, outdoors, use physical activity, and trust in God (STAND OUT). University administration believes that following these simple rules will help to decrease the risks of many diseases plus increase academic performance. A total of 240 freshman signed up to participate during the orientation week.

University Convocation - "Standup and Standout" - On September 3, Oakwood administration, faculty, staff, students, as well as Oakwood Adventist Academy students prayerfully committed to keeping God first in every part of their lives. Part of the litany read by the entire congregation stated: "From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, we will praise You. You are first in our worship, first in our prayer, and first in our praise. We will lift You up by putting You first every day of this new school year. Amen." All were encouraged to "Stand Up and Stand Out" in a powerful address from President Pollard. The 2015 University Convocation concluded with a special anointing service in which Huntsville area pastors prayed over participants.
