Oakwood to Host African American Healers Conference

Oakwood University, Oakwood University Church, and African American Healers, Inc., present the 3rd Annual African American Healers Conference: The Black Male, February 5-7, at the Oakwood University Church.

 

The conference will begin on Thursday, February 5, with a lecture by intellectual visionary Minister Kwame Vanderhorst, co-founder of Prepare Our Youth, at 10:00 a.m. The Friday evening service on February 6 will begin at 7:00 p.m., with speaker Dr. Andy Lampkin, associate professor of Religion at Loma Linda University.

 

A very special Sabbath School Celebration at 9:15 a.m., on Sabbath, February 7, will feature Minister Kwame Vanderhorst. This will be followed by the Divine Worship Experience. Former Oakwood University Senior Vice President and Provost, Dr. Mervyn A. Warren, will be the speaker, coupled with the music ministry of the Alabama A&M University Choir.

 

On Sabbath afternoon at 4:00 p.m., a community panel discussion will center on the weekend theme, "African American Males: Strong Men Getting Stronger."  Panelists will include Ron Childress, Dr. Rena Lott, Jasmin Johnson, Dr. Benson Prigg, Dr. Carmiele Wilkerson and Dr. Alfonso Green. The Wardlaw Brothers from Georgia will minister in song at 6:00 p.m., and the conference will conclude with a vesper thought by Dr. Carlton Byrd, Senior Pastor of the Oakwood University Church.

 

Dr. Ramona Hyman, conference founder and coordinator, says, "My prayer is that all who partake in this conversation find themselves baptized by and in the spirit of the healing that holds the African American community even through the storms, and that God's voice and God's thoughts concerning the African American will dance forth in the sermons and presentations.

Oakwood Celebrates Black History Month  

 

   

Black History Month at Oakwood University begins with the African-American Healers Conference, scheduled for February 5 to 7. The first Thursday Chapel program of the month will feature Minister Kwame Vanderhorst.

 

"We are proud to be a part of history, ourselves, here in Huntsville, being an institution that was originally founded to educate freed Blacks in the South," said Timothy McDonald, Ed.D., provost and senior vice president of Oakwood University and chair of the Black History Program Committee.

Plan Now to Visit the Oakwood Booth in San Antonio 

 

 

Oakwood University is planning an inviting, educational, and interactive booth in the Exhibit Hall during the upcoming General Conference Session (July 2-11). Plan to stop by booth number 502A. Two "Oakwood on the Road" alumni receptions are also being coordinated by the Division of Advancement and Development. This will be a wonderful time of fellowship, reconnection, fun, and laughter. Workers are turning over dirt, gravel, concrete, and asphalt, as they expand the parking lot, adjacent to Carter Hall. Additional parking will be available as students move into the residence hall, as well as parking spaces for employees. After almost two years of renovation and construction, Carter Hall is scheduled to be dedicated on Friday, April 3.
