Holiday Greetings from
Oakwood University

The holidays are a time of celebration, as well as a time of generosity. As we enter this special season, there is no better time to support Oakwood.

Take a moment to view the Holiday Message (video card) below from Drs. Leslie and Prudence Pollard, and prayerfully make your gift to the University today. There has never been a better time to invest in our students and the advancement of your University.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!  May God bless you and yours as you welcome the holiday season.

December 2 is "Giving Tuesday"

The inaugural #oakwoodgivingtuesday campaign starts at midnight, Tuesday, December 2, until 11:59 p.m. In just 24 hours on December 2, our goal is to raise $25,000 for Oakwood University in celebration of giving and generosity.

Before going shopping on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, plan to invest your resources in the mission of Oakwood University. Whether $10,000, $1,000, $100, or $25, your gift is valuable at any level and will help us reach our December 2nd goal of $25,000 in one day.

We are especially reaching out to our GOLD - that's "Graduates Of the Last Decade." All of our alumni from the classes of 2004 to 2014 are challenged to give a collective minimum of $5,000 to your alma mater. A generous Oakwood alum has already committed to match your gift to reach a total of $10,000 to support the next generation of servant leaders, like you.

Call, Facebook, Tweet, Snapchat, text, and Instagram your family, friends, and classmates to give a gift of any amount to any campaign: annual fund, departmental gift, scholarships, etc. You choose. Blow up social media and promote #oakwoodgivingtuesday and make a difference in the lives of students.

It's simple:

  1. Go to www.ougiving.com.
  2. Enter your donation amount.
  3. Select a campaign, any campaign you like. Scroll down and you choose.
  4. Complete required fields. Be sure to enter your class year if you are an alum.
  5. Make a comment, such as, "I designate my gift to the Business Department."
  6. Spread the word.  Invite 10 of your friends and family to join you in #oakwoodgivingtuesday.

Both one-time gifts and reccurring gifts count towards our Giving Tuesday goal.

Oakwood Hosts UNCF Women's Leadership Tea

The annual UNCF Women's Leadership Tea attracted nearly 100 businesswomen, Oakwood staff, students, local clergy, and other women in leadership to The Ledges of Huntsville, on November 16.

One of four events in the annual UNCF North Alabama Campaign, the Tea is designed  to bring awareness of the impact of the UNCF to women who believe and participate in the power of philanthropy. ERC, Inc., a local woman-owned corporation, sponsored this year's event, so all proceeds were added to the campaign total.

Jacquelyn Gates Shipe, executive director of the International Services Council of Alabama and former Oakwood Vice President of Advancement & Development, received the first UNCF Ramona Young Philanthropist Award. The award is named in memory of Ramona Young, an Oakwood alumna and philanthropist, for her volunteerism and philanthropic efforts.

"We are grateful for those that participated in the event to raise funds for the United Negro College Fund and Oakwood University," said Cheri Wilson, CFRE, director of Development, and event coordinator.

On November 17, local African American historian, Peggy Allen Towns, presented her research of local African Americans to the Oakwood University Historical Society. The audience of Historical Society members, the Department of History and Political Science, and individuals from the community listened attentively as Towns presented highlights from her first book, Duty Driven: The Plight of North Alabama's African Americans During the Civil War. Towns has done extensive research on the roles of early African American pioneers in North Alabama, the United States Colored Troops in North Alabama during the Civil War, and the Scottsboro Boys Trial. After her presentation, Towns autographed copies of her book.

Oakwood's Annual Phonathon Raises Funds "Off the Hook"
Valerie Westney, a sophomore from Highland, Md., was one of the top callers during the 2014 Phonathon.

During the annual Phonathon last week (Nov. 16-20), approxi-mately 26 Oakwood University students, under the leadership of Phonathon coordinator Lewis Jones, called almost 15,000 alumni and friends to raise funds for the institution. Student callers were trained by the Wilson-Bennett company in giving and receiving accurate information.

Early reports indicate that this event was a successful one. The goal was $50,000; before the final tally, $40,000 had already been pledged by our alumni and friends.

Prior to the Phonathon, approximately 17,000 pieces of mail were sent to individuals, asking them to "be kind, be generous when you get that call. Then, as part of the call itself, students let folk know about the different events that are happening on the campus of Oakwood University. Because people like to give to specific causes, students shared information about the new Peters Media Center, and the renovations going on at Carter Hall.

What Are You Thankful For?

The strategic plan overview, entitled "Keeping the Promise of Mission: Oakwood in the 21st Century," states that Oakwood University commits to the values of respect, compassion, integrity, excellence, service, innovation and collaboration. In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, insideOakwood recently asked Oakwood's administrative team what they are thankful for this season. Here's what they had to say:

President Dr. Leslie N. Pollard:  I am thankful for the grace of compassion expressed through careful administrators, caring faculty, loving staff, and unselfish students. I am thankful for the gift of collaboration with colleagues, whose counsel broadens our perspectives and enriches our collective decision making. I am thankful for the idea of innovation, which takes us outside the box of common, conventional, and safe action, into the realm of new possibilities for advancing the mission of our beloved Oakwood.

Senior Vice President and Provost Dr. Tim McDonald:  Someone once said that "giving without expectation of receiving is the truest definition of service." I am thankful for the blessing that Oakwood has been in my life. It is truly an honor to collaborate with such a dynamic and innovative leadership team. I am truly thankful this year that I have been able to be of service to the wonderful students and employees here at Oakwood University.

Acting Vice President for Academic Administration Dr. George Ashley:  I am thankful for the opportunity to be used by God to serve in advancing the mission of this God-ordained institution called "Oakwood University." I am thankful for the blessing of being able to work with an amazing group of insightful, knowledgeable, and creative team of administrators, faculty and staff, who share the collective goal of improving Oakwood University through a commitment to excellence and service, and go out of their way to make this a goal a reality. I am thankful to God, for the privilege to work in a Christian environment where we make "God First" in how we conduct the business of the institution.

Vice President for Financial Administration Sabrina Cotton:  I am thankful that every day Oakwood constructs plans and God's compassion turns Oakwood's plans into reality. I am thankful that Oakwood employees act with integrity when utilizing institutional resources. I am thankful for the excellence in leadership that is modeled everyday on the Oakwood campus.

Vice President for Student Services David Knight:  I am thankful for the integrity that employees bring each day to model to our students what it means to be a "God First" individual. I am thankful for the compassion with which our students distribute acts of service with other students and the community at large.
I am thankful for the respectful way in which faculty and staff encourage our young people to make healthy choices.

Vice President for Research and Employee Services Dr. Prudence Pollard:  I am thankful for colleagues who demonstrate respect. They intentionally choose words and display behaviors to communicate deep regard for students, co-workers and supervisors. I give thanks for a work environment where integrity in attitude and behavior is not only demonstrated through being respectful, but through colleagues who show the integrity of a "God-first" culture. They are honest, truth-tellers and respecters of University property and the possessions of others. Most of all, I am thankful to work with colleagues who love God and allow His light to shine through them. I am thankful!

Executive Director for Advancement and Development Kisha NorrisAs I look back on the past year in Advancement & Development, I'm most grateful for a staff that seeks to collaborate to enhance Oakwood University and its mission.  I am thankful for the spirit of service that is exhibited by faculty, staff and students. I'm especially thankful for all those supporters around the globe who show compassion and support Oakwood University and its endeavors by giving of their time, talent, and treasure.

Special Assistant to the President for Spiritual Life and Senior Chaplain Howard Weems:

I am thankful to be associated with an organization, and its administrators, that value integrity. It gives assurance that God's will is sought out and executed in all of our dealings. I am thankful for an opportunity to serve God and humanity in the capacity of chaplain. When we serve humanity, we serve God. Jesus said, "Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." At the end of the journey, "only what we do for God will last." I am thankful for the Christian respect that is reciprocated as I mingle with faculty, staff, and students on campus.

Class of 1948 Contributes Legacy Gift

Marjorie Cooper, right, treasurer of the class of 1948, visits for a moment with Cheri Wilson, director of Development.

Oakwood University is pleased to announce a recent gift to support the "Building on the Past, Claiming the Future" Capital Campaign at Oakwood University.

This capital campaign supports the renovation of Carter and Ford Hall, as well as the construction of the Peters Media Center, which will house Oakwood University Broadcasting Network (OUBN).

The Oakwood University Class of 1948 has made a generous donation to the Legacy Walkway plaza in the amount of $7,000. "Getting to sit down with Mrs. Marjorie Cooper, class treasurer, and talk about her class and their commitment to Oakwood University has been one of the highlights of my career," said Kisha Norris, CFRE, executive director of Advancement and Development. "It's exciting to see the alumni take such an active role in fundraising and supporting their alma mater."

Oakwood University administration, faculty, staff, and students would like to extend a big thank you to the Class of 1948 for their generous gift to further the mission of the University.

If you or someone you know would like to make a gift to the University, please feel free to contact the Office of Advancement and Development at (256) 726-7201 or developmentoffice@oakwood.edu.

Pollard's Places

Last week, I had the privilege of attending and presenting at the Society for Biblical Literature (SBL) in San Diego, Calif. SBL is the largest annual gathering of theologians in the world, with more than 6000 in attendance. On November 21, I presented a scholarly paper to 200 Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) theologians who attended.

(l-r) Dr. Finbar Benjamin, Acting Dean of the School of Religion, Oakwood University; President Dr. Leslie N. Pollard, Oakwood University; Dr. Olive Hennings, Professor of New Testament, Washington Adventist University.

The theme for the Adventist Society for Religious Scholars (ASRS) section was "Ecclesiology in Doctrine and Practice." My paper was an attempt to present scholarship on the subject of Mission and Structure. The paper argued that regional conference structures fit the pluralistic ministry model of the North American Division, and contribute substantially to the mission of the SDA Church in North America. The presentation was well received by the church's theologians, many of whom acknowledged that they had never thought about the subject in the context of missiology. They indicate that the paper provided new "thinking handles" for how to discuss the topic.

I also chaired the Black Theology group of ASRS. We are planning a major Pan-African theological conference for for the weekend of December 4-6, 2015, leading into the annual Pastoral Evangelism and Leadership Council. Also, I am very proud of the representative work that our Oakwood theologians contributed to the meetings. Attending from our full-time religion faculty were Drs. Finbar Benjamin, Agniel Samson, and Russell Seay. Former religion faculty Dr. Andy Lampkin, and Associate Editor of Ministry and GC Miisterial Associate, Dr. Willie Hucks, were in attendance. Our Oakwood theologians made us all proud.
