Registration Open for First HBCU-created MOOC

The Canvas Network, the Center for Excellence in Distance Learning at Wiley College, and Oakwood University are pleased to announce the launch of the first massively open online course (MOOC) ever to be created by an HBCU. Keith Augustus Burton, Ph.D., director of the Center of Adventist-Muslim Relations at Oakwood University will teach "World Religions, an Occupational Approach," through Canvas Network, the MOOC platform from Instructure. The course is free for anyone in the world to register and participate.

A fitting subject for the first HBCU-created MOOC, the course will explore world religions through the fascinating lens of workplace diversity. Registration is now open for the course on Canvas Network, and instruction will begin on October 27 and end on December 8.

This MOOC is a representative milestone of what is and can be possible for HBCUs in online education. It is the product of the collaboration between Oakwood University, Wiley College, Instructure, Lumen Learning and other organizations actively working with the Center for Excellence in Distance Learning (CEDL). The mission of the CEDL is to provide an affordable, collaborative path towards building strong, innovative online education courses and programs at HBCUs, with the ultimate goal of equipping member HBCUs to thrive in the 21st century.

Oakwood Hosts Discussion on Police Brutality
by Monica Spencer, student writer

More than 400 students gathered inside the Millet Activity Center this past Monday evening to take part in the United Student Movement's "Shots Fired" panel discussion. Organized by the United Student Movement's (USM) religious vice president Jordaan Houston, this event addressed the recent events of police brutality, ways in which one can avoid these unfortunate issues, and to encourage a more positive relationship between the community and law enforcement.

The panel members included two Oakwood students, Nia Langley and Christopher Johnson; Pastor Gregory Nelson of Madison Mission Seventh-day Adventist Church; Chief Lewis Eakins of Oakwood University Police Department; and business law teacher Camille Warren, JD. Panel moderators were two students, Lauren Eaton and Tahjai Conkerite, USM President. (Photo courtesy of USM Twitter)
