Oakwood University has designated September 30 as AGAPE Day 2014. On this day, classes are officially suspended for one day, so that students, employees and administrators can focus on serving and learning in the "community classroom."
The day begins at 9:30 a.m., when buses will transport volunteers to several work sites in Huntsville and Madison County, where they will help with painting, planting, weeding, and general clean-up. Alumni Notes
Researchers have yet to unlock the secrets of legged locomotion that allow animals to walk, run, climb and jump seemingly effortlessly. Advances in high speed video, force plate technology, and neuron probing have recently allowed scientists to "see" more of what goes on as legged animals locomote.
Leading this multi-disciplinary research at the Biomorphic Robotics Lab (BRL) at the University of South Florida is Dr. Luther R. Palmer, III, '99. The goal is to unravel the mysteries and replicate the tremendous capabilities of legged animals, which also has applications to human prosthetics. MORE
Everett Alexander, '00, a digital media specialist, is the founder of TEDxHuntsville a derivative of TED (Technology, Entertainment Design), a nonprofit organization known for online talks on an array of topics. Since 2009, local professionals and residents excited about "ideas worth spreading" have volunteered to bring TED to the Tennessee Valley. The 6th annual TEDxHuntsville event is scheduled for September 7.

Pollard's Places
On August 29-31, I had the privilege of speaking and facilitating an executive leadership development seminar in Brasilia, Brazil, for the institutional employees of the South American Division. The invitation came from Dr. Erton Kohler, division president.
The 75 attendees included the executive leadership teams from the Brazilian Publishing House, the SuperBom (translated "better than good") Food Manufacturing Corporation, the South American Division Media Center, and the Nova Tempo Television Ministry. It was a hectic and gratifying weekend. I delivered three workshops and preached twice on Sabbath. We also visited each of these institutions on this past Monday and Tuesday. Pictured with Prudence and me are Dr. Kohler, president (left), and Magdiel Perez Schultz, executive secretary of the South American Division. On Friday night, I participated in one of the most unforgettable baptisms I have ever seen. Maria Aparecida Santos (and her husband Pedro dos Santos Filho) is a former 10-year member of the Renacer Pentecostal Church, who joined the Seventh-day Adventist church as a result of the ministry of Nova Tempo (the Brazilian version of our own Breath of Life). She now belongs to theJundiai Central Church in Sao Paulo. After Maria shared her testimony, the leaders rolled out a portable baptistry and 100 five-gallon bottles of water. Each member of the audience was invited to participate in the baptism by filling up the pool. It was an honor to help pour water into the baptistry.

OU Picture of the Week
The United Student Movement (USM) is the student government of Oakwood University. The USM also serves as a liaison between the University administration and the student body, addressing problems and needs of the students at large. During last week's chapel service, the officers were officially introduced to the student body and were prayed for by the chaplains in the Office of Spiritual Life. (Photo by Anthony Chornes II)
