Classroom instruction began today on the campus of Oakwood University. More than 1350 students have been financially cleared to start classes, and more are finishing the registration process. "We are looking forward to another fantastic school year, filled with God's blessings on our students and employees," said Dr. Leslie N. Pollard, president of Oakwood University.
To dedicate the new school year to God, and to renew institutional commitment to the Oakwood University mission, "First Chapel" is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, beginning at 9:50 a.m. The theme of this chapel is "God First in Our Values," and participants will include students from all grades at Oakwood Adventist Academy.

Biology Professor Responds to Adventist President's Statement Regarding Evolution
At a Bible and science conference on August 15 in Las Vegas, Nev., General Conference President Ted Wilson stated that "life has existed on the Earth for only a few thousand years, not millions of years." He also said that "teachers who believe otherwise should not call themselves Seventh-day Adventists or work in Church-operated schools."
His comments have sparked the interest of local religion report Kay Campbell of The Huntsville Times. She spoke with Biology Professor Juliet Bailey-Penrod, who believes that Wilson's statement merely reiterates what she herself believes and teaches in her classes. "We all have our biases," she says, explaining how one can be a serious scientist and also a creationist. MORE

Vote & Quote to Help Oakwood University

Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation are partnering to engage students, alumni and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to raise scholarship funds as a part of the sixth annual "Allstate Quotes for Education Program."
For every person who receives an insurance quote from an Allstate Agent and mentions "Quotes for Education" until December 31, 2014, Allstate will donate $10. This year's goal is to raise $200,000, earmarked for general scholarship funds to assist students attending HBCUs. In addition, for the third year in a row, everyone will also have the opportunity to cast their vote for the HBCU of their choice to win an additional $50,000 in scholarship funding.

Pollard's Places
Yesterday, my wife Prudence and I had the pleasure of being filmed for a show titled "Starting Point" that airs on Hope Channel Romania (SperantaTV). Adrian Bocaneanu (left) who serves as the host for the program asked us questions about the history of Oakwood, how Prudence and I met and about our wonderful journey to lead out at the University. The production was filmed in our own Burrell Hall communication studio.
