Oakwood Faculty and Staff Prepare for the 2014-2015 Academic School Year

by Timothy McDonald, Ed.D., provost and senior vice president

To "Start Strong and Finish Strong" is the challenge that will be issued to faculty and staff during the school's annual Colloquium scheduled for August 4-7, under the theme, "Sustaining Our Mission in Challenging Times."

The intention, according to President Leslie Pollard, is to review and understand the challenges of our day, but to stay focused on the premise of "motivating our faculty and staff to remain true to the mission of Adventist higher education and Oakwood, which is to transform students through biblically based education for leadership service to God and humanity."

Guest speakers this year include Debleaire Snell, senior pastor of the First Seventh-day Adventist Church in Huntsville, Ala.; Dr. Paul Brantley, vice president for the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists; Dr. Ivory Toldson, from the White House Initiative on HBCUs, and Dr. Colwick Wilson of Loma Linda University.

Reports and presentations on specific direction and targeted purposes for the new year will be presented by the president, deans and vice presidents. Particular attention will highlight aspects of the newly developed Strategic Action Plan, updates on infusing Biblical Foundations in the curriculum and progress on implementing critical thinking across the curriculum as specified in the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

Oakwood Welcomes New Students

Oakwood University will host its 2014 New Student Orientation on August 13-19. Themed "Get Connected!" the major focus of this event is to help make the experience of first-time students a special one all while informing the students of important information about their academic journey at Oakwood.

The opening session speaker for the event is Andy Masters, an award-winning author and international speaker. Masters has written five books, earned four degrees, and has presented hundreds of informative and inspirational programs for faculty, staff and students.

One of the new initiatives for Orientation is "Operation Move-in." According to Assistant Vice President for Student Services Ryan Smith, this initiative being held August 13 will provide Oakwood employees the opportunity to assist students with moving in their belongings, show them around the campus, or even pause and pray with parents and students. This will help students form a bond with Oakwood that will last a lifetime.
