The Aeolians Win Again!

Congratulations once again to the Aeolians and Director Jason Max Ferdinand for winning the Best Choir Award at the HBCU Awards held at Dillard University this past Friday. This is the second year in a row that the choir has won this award.

Nominees in this category needed to be able to demonstrate local appeal and a positive ambassadorial outreach for their college or university through submitted examples of media coverage, or examples of performances outside of their home campus and city. Competing with the Aeolians were choirs from Morgan State University, Dillard University, and Norfolk State University.

Ferdinand said to the Aeolians (via Facebook): "So very proud of you all!!! For another year, the HBCU Media Summit has recognized your hard work, widespread outreach and commitment to excellence. We won this award while in England last year. Congrats on being 2014 choir of the year!"

Oakwood Student Chosen for National Trials program at NYU School of Law

OU Senior Jonte Hunter is one of 20 students participating in the Advantage Testing Foundation's Training and Recruitment Initiative for Admission to Leading Law Schools (Trials) program. The Foundation serves as the public service arm of Advantage Testing, a national tutoring service. "It's very rigorous, but it yields great results," Hunter said after explaining that he decided to apply to further his interest in family law. "I'm really passionate about families and I believe that families are the foundations for success. A lot of the successful people that we have today can attribute much of their success to their strong families and the history of their strong families." MORE

Alexandrea Irby, left, with Redstone Federal Credit Union President and CEO Joseph Newberry

Last month, Alexandrea Irby, 08, administrative assistant for Academic Administration, was honored at the 2014 Redstone Federal Credit Union (RFCU) Scholarship Recipient Dinner. Ten years ago, Alexandrea received the scholarship while a student at Oakwood University. For the first time in the history of the scholarship, RFCU decided to select an honoree and highlight their accomplishments since the scholarship was received. Irby was recognized in 2013 by United Way as the "Give" award recipient. Because of this and her previous work with United Way, RFCU will send a check to United Way in Irby's name to assist the United Way in their mission and continue Redstone's mission of "People helping people."

Pollard's Places

This week I am participating in the Honda Corporation's Campus All-Star Challenge Strategic Advisory Session. The purpose of the 14-person committee of Honda executives and participant Universities is to strategize how to enrich the partnership between Honda and the HBCU community. Oakwood University enjoys a stellar reputation with the college bowl community because of its continued success in the Honda competitions. The 2014 Honda All-Star team placed second in the 64-school competition and our coach, Dr. Rennae Elliott, was named Coach of the Year. Funds raised by the Oakwood Honda team have been used to finance students' matriculation at Oakwood University. - Dr. Leslie Pollard
