Oakwood Participates in Global Youth Day
On March 15, 8 million Adventist youth will leave their pews and engage in a day of active service. Sponsored by the General Conference's Youth Department, Global Youth Day is dedicated to spending time as the "hands and the feet of Jesus" in serving others.
Oakwood University students, faculty and staff will also be participating in this worldwide event by helping out in the greater Huntsville community under the theme "Global Youth Day 4HIM." "We are very excited to be a part of this global initiative," said Howard Weems, OU special assistant to the president for spiritual life and senior chaplain. Events planned by the Office of Spiritual Life include clothing and food distribution in two of Huntsville's urban housing communities and visitation with nursing home residents.
The General Conference's Youth Department plans to air all of the Global Youth Day activities on Hope Church Channel. You can view Oakwood's one-hour special at 6:00 p.m. CST. Pray for the Oakwood students, faculty and staff as they participate in this community outreach activity on March 15.

History and Political Science Students Visit the University of Alabama School of Law

Professor Bryan Fair conducts a mock law school class.
|
On February 21, 24 aspiring attorneys from Oakwood, accompanied by Dr. Samuel London (Department Chairman) and Professor Anne Winbush (Pre-Law Advisor), attended the Minority Law Forum and Open House at the University of Alabama School of Law, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Montre' Crodine, University of Alabama Associate Professor of Law, presented "Legal Education in a Nutshell," an overview of the law school experience, specifically highlighting the challenges encountered by minorities pursuing law careers. Becca Brady, Assistant Dean for Admissions, encouraged the prospective law students to register with DiscoverLaw.org to obtain law school application fee waivers, LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) preparation assistance, and valuable information on trends and issues impacting the legal community.
A representative of Kaplan, a company specializing in test preparation, taught a 45-minute class on the essential skills tested on the LSAT, such as: logic games, reading comprehension, and logical reasoning.
In the afternoon session, Susan Lyons, Professor of Law, spoke to the group on the law school application process. Bryan K. Fair, Professor of Law, taught a mock law school class. At the end of the program, a special drawing took place in which students from the various colleges and universities in attendance received door prizes. Ephraim Duronville, a senior History major from Oakwood University, won the grand prize of a Kaplan scholarship valued at $1,300.

Oakwood Competes Again for Home Depot® Grant
 |
In 2013, officials from Home Depot present Oakwood University with winning grant.
|
Oakwood University has been announced as a finalist in The Home Depot's 2014 RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL Campus Improvement Grant Program. One $50,000 Tier I major grant, 13
Tier II $10,000 grants, and three $25,000 campus pride grants for the schools that receive the most online votes and social media activity, as assessed by The Home Depot®, will be awarded. The Home Depot® will announce the winners on or around May 2.
In 2013 Oakwood won the Tier 1 grant, which allowed the University to construct an outdoor pavilion. Because of last year's victory, Oakwood is not eligible to win in the Tier 1 category. However, Oakwood is eligible to win in the campus pride category, which will allow the University to re-seed the softball and soccer fields as well as install sprinkler systems.
Until April 14, supporters can visit www.retoolyourschool.com/vote-now to vote for Oakwood University's campus improvement project. "We need everyone's support to help Oakwood win this grant," said Kisha Norris, executive director for advancement and development for Oakwood. Oakwood is only Seventh-day Adventist university in the competition.
The winning school of the Campus Pride Grant will be selected by a combination of the applicant's social media activity and voting score. The three applicants with the highest votes and most social media activity, as determined by the sponsor during the voting period, will be awarded with the Campus Pride Grants.
Oakwood University had the most votes last year! Let's do it again. Go to www.retoolyourschool.com/vote-now and vote as often as possible - and from all of your personal computers and devices. You can also Tweet about the competition using #OakwoodTHDRYS.
And be sure to tell your family and friends to do the same.

Alumni Notes
Earlier this week,
The Detroit Free Press featured a story on Eric Thomas, '02.
In the article, Thomas talked about his experience at Oakwood. It was a debate class at Oakwood that caused him to realize what he should do with his life. "Speaking in front of people was really the only thing I was comfortable doing," he said. Click here to read the entire article.

Pollard's Places
I am just returning from the UNCF Annual Meeting in New York. There, university presidents from institutions like Fisk, Bethune-Cookman, Morehouse, and Spelman, participated in the business sessions. I had the privilege of introducing the new Acting President of Tuskegee, Dr. Matthew Jenkins, to the leadership group. The UNCF, which stands for the United Negro College Fund, is a philanthropic organization serving 39 private historically black member colleges and universities.
Because Oakwood is a member institution, being founded in 1896, choosing a mission to the historically underserved, and being fully accredited, the UNCF provides many scholarships for qualifying Oakwood students ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per academic year. It is my pleasure to attend these meetings to find more ways our youth can enjoy the "Oakwood Experience" through the support of an organization like the UNCF. Dr. Michael Lomax, the President and CEO of the UNCF, said repeatedly during our meetings that we must invest more resources in the education of our young people.
And here's a special bonus. For those of you who are coming to our Oakwood University graduation on May 10, Dr. Lomax will speak to our graduates. He will challenge them to maximize their opportunities and to give back in service to their communities because "A mind is a terrible thing to waste!"
