Reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, across the United States, many people are reflecting on the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This morning, the administrators of Oakwood University and I had the privilege of attending the 29th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast in the city of Huntsville, Ala. This event helps to aid students here in the Huntsville/Madison County area with academic scholarships as well as mentoring and tutoring young, upcoming leaders.

Oakwood University had the distinct honor of hosting Dr. King in the early 60s. On March 19, 1962, King gave speech at our university because Oakwood was the only venue in Huntsville that would allow him to speak. It was a moment that many would treasure and remember. (Check out a local news story about this event).

Dr. King once said "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."

Everyday at Oakwood University, we work to advance the mission of transformational education - education that is God-appointed. Therefore, in the spirit and mission of Dr. King, we are on the move. And nothing and/or no one will turn us around!

Continue to pray with us and for us that we are living out our true assignment that God has given us here at Oakwood University.

- Dr. Leslie N. Pollard, president of Oakwood University
