Visitors from General Conference present "Wholesome Relationships in the Digital Age"

by Jyremy Reid, Student Writer/Photographer

Oakwood had the pleasure of having Willie and Elaine Oliver speak to the students for Chapel on September 12. The Olivers are the directors of the Department of Family Ministries for the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church World Headquarters.

"Begin with the end in mind,"

Oliver said.

The aim of their presentation entitled, "Wholesome Relationships in the Digital Age," was to encourage students to trust God's plan for their lives (Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.")

Willie and Elaine Oliver gave the students the analogy of a flight plan, saying that a clear destination for the future is absolutely necessary, as well as a compass, otherwise known as the Bible, for guidance. God has a plan for our lives and we need to be open to that plan. When thinking about our future relationships, we also need to write down the things we want in and out of them too. Writing these goals down will help ensure what we really want in life. "Begin with the end in mind," they said.

Above all else, the Olivers warned the students to guard their hearts and minds. We as Christians are to be careful about what goes into our brains. There are two natures that humans possess: righteous

and carnal. The nature you feed, is the nature that will win. Therefore, we should abstain from sexual immorality and all other unscrupulous things. "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." - Proverbs 4:23

In closing, the Olivers again indicated for the students to follow the compass that God has given to them. God wants everyone to prosper, for He has given us a hope and a future. Don't go around God's plan. By following God's special idea, we will rise to success. Guard your heart, so you can experience that joy and pass it on to the next generation.

OAA students have lunch with the President

Dr. Pollard said (on Facebook): "On Tuesday, September 17, I had the most important meeting of my Presidency at Oakwood University: lunch with the pre-K - 2 graders from Oakwood Elementary. Sheer fun and lots of love. I recommend it highly!"

The children asked Dr. Pollard several questions during a question-and-answer period, followed by a delicious spaghetti lunch, and a photo opportunity. For the photo shown here, the children enthusiastically said "President!" instead of the customary "cheese!"

null 'Out of Cordoba' documentary writer, director and producer, Jacob Bender, to visit OU

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - People working toward peace among Muslims, Jews and Christians in the 21st century can look to the past for a prime example of a society that thrived when the energies of those three great faiths were harnessed in the cooperative work of peace and prosperity, says Jacob Bender, producer of the award-winning documentary "Out of Cordoba."

Bender will lecture in Huntsville and attend at screening of his film on Thursday, September 26, 2013, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., in Oakwood University's McKee Business & Technology Building, on Adventist Boulevard N.W. at Wynn Drive N.W.  The lecture and screening are free and open to the public.

Bender, who is Jewish, uses the documentary to trace the lives and influence of two of the most important 12th century Western philosophers: Maimonides, who was Jewish, and his contemporary, Averroes, the great Muslim thinker, scientist and religious scholar. Both men lived, wrote and taught in Cordoba, Spain.

"Oakwood on the Road" receptions score "10s" with Oakwood alums, friendsNext stop: Metro DC

From Oakwood's Orlando alumni and friends, "10s" meant the $10,000 they contributed to Alma Mater in gifts and pledges on that Saturday evening, August 10.

Central Florida resident and retired pastor Russell Bates, Sr. (class of 1951) later reflected, "It was so encouraging to hear the progress taking place at OU," as he handed Miss Norris his personal check toward his capital campaign commitment.

By all accounts "Oakwood on the Road (OOTR)," the national (and inter-American) series of regional receptions where alumni, friends and prospective students and parents get to see and hear OU senior administrators, is bridging together the campus with its key outlying stakeholders.

Strategically, according to organizer and Advancement and  Development executive director Miss Kisha Norris, "these meet-greet-and-eat gatherings are linked to high-profile scheduled events which bring together OU officials with local and area Oakwood supporters - alums, friends and prospective students and their folks."

For example, the annual White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities conference, she continued, has invited the Aeolians Choir to perform at the September 26 luncheon for its annual meeting at the Washington Hilton. "Our Aeolians were invited not only because they won the World Spirituals Championship and three gold medals at the 2012 World Choir Games - where Oakwood University was the only HBCU represented of the 362 international choirs there competing - but our director, Jason Max Ferdinand has led our choristers to win the last three national HBCU choir championships (2011, 2012 and 2013).

"The choir's acceptance of this performance invitation in the metro DC area propelled us to work with the local alumni and co-host this

continuing series of Oakwood on the Road receptions at the Washington Hilton."

To date, OOTRs have occurred in such areas as:

  1. Greater Nashville, during the NAD Teachers' Convention - August, 2012;
  2. Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex - January, 2013;
  3. Allegheny West Conference camp meeting - June, 2013;
  4. Hamilton, Bermuda - July, 2013; and
  5. Central Florida/Orlando - August, 2013.
  6. Next stop for the OOTR train? Saturday evening, September 28, in the metro Washington, DC area.

Most recently, the central Florida event brought out some 60 alums, friends and prospects. True to the successful OOTR model, the attendees:

  • Heard and saw President Pollard's brief "State of the University" PowerPoint presentation, from which he later fielded and answered a series of questions;
  • Submitted or updated their contact information, in order to receive campus print and online publications and weekly updates;
  • Won an array of OU paraphernalia as gifts;
  • Enjoyed a light Sabbath evening meal and worship thought by Pastor Dr. Herman Davis; and
  • Contributed more than $10,000 in checks and pledged donations, toward the school's current $9.3 million capital campaign.

Following the metro Washington, DC, reception which promises to break all records for both attendance and contributions and pledges, the next schedule OOTR is for the greater Houston area. Stay tuned.
