Almost "Home" -- Home Depot, that is

Construction began this week on the OU outdoor pavilion near the campus' Unity Pond, sponsored by the $50,000 grand prize winnings from this year's The Home Depot "Retool Your School" HBCU campus improvement contest.

Now, "Reclaim Your Name." OU wishes to say, "thank you" for your support as one of the winning 340,000 votes! If you voted at least once toward our victory, we want to inscribe your individual name as a "donor" at your outdoor pavilion.

If you haven't done so already, send your individual name and email address to us at [email protected].  (Each name must be associated with a separate email address, please.)

Additionally, if you're in Huntsville this upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend, join us on Sunday, September 1, for "Volunteers Day." Together, we will clean and spruce up the pavilion's surrounding area, preparing it for immediate use.

Division gets a new name

On Thursday, August 15, 2013, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees voted a new name to the Human Resources Management, Faculty Development and Research Division. That new name is the Division of Research and Employee Services. The new name came as a recommendation from President's Council to the Executive Committee of the Board.

"We are delighted" said President Leslie Pollard, "that the new name explicitly signals the purpose and function of the new Division--namely, elevating research to its appropriate place in our maturing University and messaging employee development and service, for both faculty and staff, as institutional priority."

Oakwood alumni show support, brighten first day of school in Allegheny East Conference (AEC):

Friend of Oakwood Joe Dent said (on Facebook):  "Proud of my beautiful wife, Judy Chiles-Dent (Oakwood alum), Supt of Schools, Allegheny East Conf of SDA (AEC), and all her fellow department heads and AEC officers for emptying the conference office, coming onto a prayer line together at 6:00 a.m. (on the first day of school) with principals and board chairs, and showing up in all the AEC schools with our pastors to greet returning children on their first day of school.

From conference president Elder Fordham (Oakwood alum) in Newark, NJ, to VP Dr. Robinson in Newport News, VA, to VP Finance Lawrence Martin (Oakwood alum) in Pine Forge, PA  -- all our AEC department directors and officers greeted children returning to school.
