New Faces in New Places

One of the highlights of Faculty Staff Colloquium 2013 was the media presentation of "New Faces in New Places" - to inform Colloquium attendees of the newest members of the Oakwood family, and/or the various staff changes in each division.

Thanks to Sylvia Germany, Selita Harpe and Karen White (Human Resources Management), Sandra Burton (Information Technology), Ivy Starks (Advancement & Development) and Debbe Millet (Public Relations) for their hard work in assembling the presentation. Good job!

This week, we present the "New Faces" -- those employees who have joined the OU family since Colloquium 2012.  "New Places" (those employees who have transferred positions) will be presented next week.

Welcome to "the Oaks!"

Oakwood visits Central Florida

Greater Orlando became a "weeklong summer residence" for Oakwood University, August 4-10. OU administrators attended an endless series of Adventist Black Caucus, ASI and alumni meetings.

The week culminated with an evening of "precious memories" and fellowship at an  "Oakwood on the Road" alumni event, hosted by the Greater Orlando Chapter of the OU Alumni Association, and Oakwood's Office of Alumni Relations.

The next "Oakwood On the Road" event is scheduled for September 28 in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area.  Watch for further announcements.

Central Florida resident Russell Bates, Sr. (class of 1951, center) said of the alumni event: "It was so encouraging to hear the progress taking place at OU."  He's all smiles with OU grads Stephanie Francis (left) and Leah Brandon (right), both from the class of 2013.

OU alum awarded journalism fellowship

David Person, class of 1985, is "grateful for, and very blessed to have, the opportunity to explore the connection between poverty and immigration in the south as a Marguerite Casey Foundation 2013 Journalism Fellow."

The Marguerite Casey Foundation, a private, nonprofit grantmaking organization, seeks to increase the public's understanding of the issues and policies that affect families living in poverty. The goal of its journalism fellowships and scholarship on poverty is to support a cadre of journalists who, through their reporting, can expose the myth that poverty is a chosen lifestyle rather than a result of policy and public attitudes and perception about the poor.
