OU represented at Southern Region National Association of Black Accountants Conference
Ten accounting students from the Business and Information Systems Department, and one past student, attended the Southern Region Student Conference of the National Association of Black Accountants in Atlanta, Georgia, accompanied by their advisor, Dr. Faye Brathwaite.
At the conference the students interviewed and networked with such companies as Deloitte &Touche, Price Waterhouse, Caterpillar, Internal Revenue Service, Coca-Cola and General Electric, to name a few. There were also several mandatory technical sessions, including "Resume Critique" and "Millionaires, Masterminds and Moguls."
Students also met with Oakwood alumni: Mr. Assimeh of Price Waterhouse; Dr. Lynette Wood (pictured, far right) who was a student of Dr. Brathwaite (pictured, center), and Dr. Ron Campbell (pictured, left),who was the professor of Dr. Faye Brathwaite, all carrying on the tradition of teaching accounting and mentoring students.

One student named Keisha said it was the "first time [I had the chance to] network on such a large scale. I appreciate the interview and meeting other students from different schools." Another student, Kim, said it was "very informative and eye-opening to the wonderful opportunities available to accounting students, and the ability to interview with large corporations." Finally, student Deliair described the trip as a "a good experience; I learned a lot; I feel like next year I will do better."

History and Political Science hosts videoconference with Howard University School of Law
On October 24, 2012, in a second-floor classroom of Moran Hall, the Oakwood University Pre-Law Society conducted a video conference with two representatives of the Howard University School of Law in Washington, DC. Approximately 30 students attended.
Law Professor Sherman Rogers (Oakwood, class of 1973), described what he looks for in prospective law students and what makes them academic standouts in the classroom. He also gave a substantial amount of background history concerning Howard University's School of Law. Professor Rogers noted that two graduates of Howard Law School were responsible for founding the American University College of Law.
Reginald McGahee, Howard Law School's Dean of Admissions, provided a plethora of pointers to help aspiring law students evaluate which school is right for them. He stressed that prospective law students not only concentrate on rank and prestige, but take into consideration where they want to practice law and whether employers frequently recruit graduates from that institution. Dean McGahee also announced that he would waive the law school application fee for all Oakwood University seniors.
Rogers and McGahee answered numerous questions from those in attendance. Overall, the event was a huge success. The OU Pre-Law Society obtained a wealth of information about the Howard University School of Law, and the law school representatives were able to showcase their institution to the students of Oakwood University. During the academic year, the OU Pre-Law Society plans to have more video conferences with various law school representatives.

Interest in political process high among Oakwood students
~ by Lauren Foster
Oakwood students have expressed a great interest in next week's presidential election. Approximately 200-300 Oakwood students are registered to vote here in Huntsville, Alabama, as well as several others who are registered to vote 'absentee' in their home state.
The United Student Movement (USM) has done an effective job in promoting not only an interest across campus, but encouraging (via 'social media') students to watch the debates and registering to vote. After talking to several students, it was clear how important financial aid is to them in order to achieve higher education. One of the main issues that interests our students is presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney's desire to cut student loans.
Nichole Jackson, a junior public relations major, said: "At first, I thought that Romney didn't have the potential to win. But after watching the debates I realized they both have the opportunity to win. It's actually kind of scary. If he [Romney] wins, it will affect college students greatly."

We are reminded in Matthew 10:18 (New American Standard Bible): "and you will even be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles." Amen!

A note about 'Hurricane Sandy'
We want to assure our readers that, in the middle of all of the activities happening on our campus, the Oakwood family continues to pray for all individuals and families who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath.

President Pollard recently shared this reminder from Ellen G. White, found in Christian Service, that:
"The restraining Spirit of God is even now being withdrawn from the world. Hurricanes, storms, tempests, fire and flood, disasters by sea and land, follow each other in quick succession. Science seeks to explain all these. The signs thickening around us, telling of the near approach of the Son of God, are attributed to any other than the true cause. Men cannot discern the sentinel angels restraining the four winds that they shall not blow until the servants of God are sealed; but when God shall bid His angels loose the winds, there shallbe such a scene of strife as no pen can picture."--Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 408. {ChS 52.1}
Our prayers are with you.
