September 24
Freshmen with Alumnae sisters, mothers and grandmothers or sisters who are current students will meet for snacks at 11:30 a.m. in the Main Conference Room on the First Floor. Attendance is expected.

A Freshmen Retreat is being held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. across the St. Joseph Circle in the St. Joseph Center. Students will meet at 8 a.m. in The Academy Center. Please contact CORE Ministry teacher Elizabeth Pillari for more information.
Following the retreat, there is a Retreat Leader Meeting from 2:15 to 4 p.m. at SJA.

The SJA Basketball Team is hosting its annual "father/daughter basketball night." The 5th & 6th Grade session is from 6-7:30 p.m., and the 7th & 8th grade session is 7:30-9 p.m. The clinic is $20 and all participants will receive an SJA basketball T-shirt. Although the event is called "father/daughter," any caring adult can be substituted in the absence of a father for the night. Senior Awarded Cleveland Heroes Run Scholarship

Who: Kaitlyn Poschner
What: Kaitlyn is one of three recipients this year of a $2,000 West Park Cleveland Police & Fire Memorial Walkway merit scholarship, awarded from proceeds of the annual Cleveland Heroes Run. The run was held last weekend in West Park starting and finishing at SJA.
Fun Facts: Kaitlyn is the daughter of Cleveland Police Officer Norbert Poschner and Heidi Poschner. Kaitlyn is applying to Kent State and Baldwin Wallace universities. She hopes to pursue a degree in American Sign Language and interpretive studies. "I am so honored to have been chosen for this scholarship," she shared.

Senior Inspired by Rhode Island School of Design Pre-College Experience
Senior Nina Ripich spent this summer living her dream, thanks to being selected for a prestigious six-week Rhode Island School of Design Pre-college Program. The residential program offers high school students a comprehensive introduction to the college art school experience. Students follow a college-level studio curriculum and live in RISD residence halls, in a full-immersion encounter with art and design education.

Nazareth Library Offers eBook Service

The Nazareth Library now offers a free reading service through OverDrive eBook.
"The OverDrive collection is an extension of Nazareth Library's physical library, only it's online with 24/7 access to eBooks. It's convenient for students to check out titles anytime, anywhere, with no worry about misplacing or damaging a book. These digital titles automatically return at the end of the lending period, " shared Nazareth Library Department Chair Rebecca Synk.
The library staff sponsored " launch parties" for parents and students to explain the service. The final "launch" is for teachers at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, in the Dining Hall.

Senior Year Kick Off Party a Success

SJA seniors hosted a successful "Kick Off to Senior Year Party" last Sunday on the SJA campus. The event, conceived at organized by Caroline Mills '14, was attended by about 140 students from SJA, Saint Ignatius, Magnificat and St. Edward high schools. A total of $500 was donated to the Cleveland Courage Fund. Full Story

Weekly Prayer Service Open to All
All students, faculty, staff and parents have the opportunity to share a prayerful reflection, thanks to the initiation of a Weekly Prayer Service being held on Thursdays from 7:40-7:55 a.m. in the Chapel. "Our theme this year, working with the Sisters from the Congregation of St. Joseph, is 'Building a Caring Community.' The best way I know to do this is to gather people in prayer," shared Vice President of Mission Sr. Phyllis DiFuccia, SSJ.

Writing Center Is Open for Students Needing Input, Extra Assistance

The Writing Center is officially open for business! During both activity blocks, teachers will be available to help students with all writing assignments, from essay questions to research papers to college application essays. Students also will receive assistance generating ideas and even proofreading.
The Writing Center coordinator is Intervention Specialist Becky Goede McNulty '96, who started the program in the 2007-08 school year to help students improve their writing and editing skills through one-to-one consultations.
"All students need to do is sign up outside Room 222 before school for either activity block," shared Intervention Specialist Courtney Koz, who is currently handling the center during Mrs. McNulty's maternity leave.
"This is a wonderful resource for our students whether they need extra help or just want to improve their writing skills," stated Principal Jeff Sutliff.

First JaguarJackpot Deadline is Next Friday
The first Jaguar Jackpot raffle ticket deadline is fast approaching! If you are participating in our raffle, please make sure to bring your tickets and money by Friday, September 27, to the Finance Office in order to be included in the first drawing on October 4.

Parents - Come to the 'Terrace Tailgate' party on Sunday, October 20!
The SJA parent organization Academy Parents is planning an afternoon of fun on Sunday, October 20, with a " Terrace Tailgate" party on the Howley Terrace for the Browns vs. Green Bay Packers game. The event starts at 3:30 p.m. The game begins at 4:15 p.m. The event is free. Brats, buns, adult beverages and chips will be provided. Please bring a dessert or side-dish to share. Parent Volunteers Needed for the 2014 'Celebrate the Academy' gala
If you have a love of planning parties and also want to help raise scholarship money for Saint Joseph Academy students, now is the time to get involved with the annual 'Celebrate the Academy' (CTA) gala. The first meeting for parent volunteers is being held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, at SJA. Refreshments will be served.
'Celebrate the Academy' is being held February 8, 2014 at LaCentre Conference and Banquet Facility in Westlake. This year's theme is "Building a Foundation for Success." Soccer
On Saturday, September 14, the team played Lakewood High School. Varsity played a tough match but fell short of a win losing 4-0. Junior Varsity ended in a tie 1-1. Kayla Tomm '17 scored for the JV Jaguars, was assisted by Katie Donovan '17. Volleyball
Varsity went 1-1 this past week, beating Hathaway Brown 25-18, 25-21, 27-25, but losing to Holy Name in a tight match 26-24, 25-23, and 25-19. Amber Petras 15' led the team with 11 kills for the week. Jordan Kortowich '15 led the team in digs with 37 for the week. Alison Rogozinski '16 had 39 assists to lead the team. Junior Varsity went 3-0 this week, beating Walsh Jesuit 25-19, 25-20, Hathaway Brown 25-5, 25-8, and Holy Name 25-23, 25-10. The Freshman team was 1-1 this week, losing to Walsh Jesuit 20-25, 20-25 and beating Holy Name 25-12 25-6.
Golf
On Monday, September 9, Varsity came in 8th with a score of 398 in the Canterbury Golf Tournament. Lindsey Keefe '14 was the team medalist with a score of 95. The second event of the week was a match against Kent Roosevelt at Big Met. The Kent team is one of the top teams in the state and they scored 159 to our 191. The Jaguar top scorers were Kaitlin Rose '15 and Alicia Abele '16, both shooting a 45.
Tennis
Varsity played opponents from Amherst, Mayfield and Chagrin Falls high schools last week. At Amherst, Grace Powers '14/Allison Saracina '15 led the Jaguars with a 7-5, 6-0 win at second doubles. Sidney Ruebensaal '14/Emily Rouse '14 lost a close 6-4, 6-4 match at first doubles and Colleen FitzGerald '16 moved up one position due to an injury and played well in a 7-5, 6-3 loss at second singles. In a 4-1 loss to Chagrin Falls on Thursday, Brooke Kahl '14 was victorious 6-2, 6-2 to lead the Jaguars.
Junior Varsity was victorious in both of their matches this past week, beating Amherst 4-1 on Monday and Mayfield 5-0 on Tuesday. In the victory over Amherst, Abigail Riley '15 and Halli Grunder '14 had singles victories. In the win over Mayfield, Angela Cicero '17 and the doubles team of Ciara McGlynn '14/Grace Hendryx '15 contributed individual wins.
Over the weekend, JV competed in the Avon Quad and finished in third place. Shaikara Stephens '14 and Brittany Hegeman '15 teamed up at second doubles and won all three of their matches to win the second doubles flight championship. Abigail Riley '15 also had a great day, going 2-1 overall and finishing in a three-way tie for the third singles championship.
Cross Country
While saving the top runners for the weekend and sitting a few others for injuries, Cross Country had some younger runners emerge at the McDonough Invitational hosted by Villa Angela-Saint Joseph.
With a split squad in the Varsity race, SJA "A" finished 10th and SJA "B" finished 11th out of 19 teams. Katie Butterfield '16 and Lauren Marconi '15 were the first Jaguars across the line with a personal best times of 21:45 and 21:46 respectively. Not far behind were freshmen first-time Varsity runners Alana Vovk (21:58) and Mary Hyland (22:01). Second year runner Maeve Kroeger '14 and Clare Fibbi '14 wrapped up the Top 6 in 22:08 and 22:21.
In the open race, freshman Maggie Carroll was the top runner for SJA, with a personal- best time of 23:53. In the reserve race, senior Maddie Zimmerman returned to the line up with a 5th place time of 22:21. Katie Butterfield '16 was named the team's Athlete of the Meet for her efforts.
Tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, the top seven runners will compete in the Midwest All-Catholic Meet in Dayton, while the reserves go to the Valley Forge Invitational at Tri-C West.
Crew
The Blessing of the Boats for Crew is being held today, Friday, September 20, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rivergate Boathouse in Cleveland. Crew is adding two 4+ boats to the Jaguar Navy.
The Jaguar Navy will compete in the Head of the Cuyahoga race tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, joining some 2,000 rowers and 425+ boat entries from more than 50 clubs from around the country. HOTC is a challenging 4,800-meter course with five major river turns for both medals. Races start at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m..
