Strong Student Response to New Computer Science Classes:  Hundreds of District students are registering for the Boise District's new Advanced Placement Computer Science classes.  Beginning in the 2016-17 school year, Boise, Borah, Capital and Timberline high school will offer two AP Computer Science classes - AP Computer Science and AP Computer Science Principles.  To date, 72 students have registered for AP Computer Science and 218 students have signed-up to take AP Computer Science Principles.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program of college-level courses offered at many high schools. AP courses can help you gain the skills and study habits you'll need to be successful in college. You'll improve your writing, problem-solving, time-management skills, and learn how to stay focused on your work and goals. Research shows that AP courses help students graduate from college in four years and qualify for scholarships.

A recent national survey reinforces the notion that a computer science college degree is a smart career move, and finds that students are well aware of it. Check with your high school counselor for more information about registering for the District's new AP Computer Science classes.

Following are quotes from some Capital High students who registered for the new computer science classes:

Lorenzo Espinoza, Capital High, Junior: "The reason I am taking computer science relates to cars. I want to be an automotive engineer. Everything is going digital, like all the self driving cars that are eventually going to be a very common thing."

Hailey Brookins, Capital High, Junior: "I feel like everything is going digital. My dad and mom tell me about their jobs and they both use coding. It's something that I think everyone should have an introduction to. My dad is a structural engineer and my mom is a physical therapist."

Tanner Hahn, Capital High, Junior: "Computer science is the fastest growing field in the nation right now with some of the highest paying jobs. In the future, it will be one of the requirements to be a scientist, so that's why I want to take computer science."

District High School Seniors Named National Merit Finalists:  The following 18 Boise School District high school seniors have been named Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.  The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)- a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year-and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.

With the 27th class in 2015, the Foundation has provided over 5,550 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $56 million in educational support. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship.

District Graduate and Current STEP Student Designs Logo for Run for Autism:  Artwork by Christopher Huntsman (pictured), a recent graduate of Boise High School and currently a student in the District's STEP Program, has been chosen as the official logo that will be on the T-shirts for this year's Treasure Valley Run for Autism.  The multi-colored rosette (pictured) was adapted from an original design by Christopher. Christopher, who has autism, is interested in pursuing a program of study in digital film-making and video production, game art and design, or media arts and animation. In 2014 he completed a street-art mural painting on display in downtown Boise and worked with three other local teen artists to create a work of art for Idaho Parents Unlimited through VSA, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Christopher was one of eight winners of the 2015 VSA Playwright Discovery Competition, an annual competition of over 400 high school applicants, with and without disabilities, to examine the disability experience and express their views through the art of script writing. His winning screenplay was performed as a reading onstage at the Kennedy Center. The STEP Program (Student Transition Education Program) is one of three transition programs in the Boise District for students with disabilities who are 18-21 years old. Students have the opportunity to continue their education after walking in graduation with their peers at their home high school. STEP students work on employment, independent living, self advocacy and other important lifeskills. The focus of the program is to teach students with disabilities to become more independent, obtain paid employment and live on their own or in supported living environments.
