District Receives Donation of Books for Students:  The Autism Society Treasure Valley, in conjunction with Sesame Street, made a donation of books to each of the elementary schools in the Boise School District. Sesame Street recently added a new character to their program, named Julia, who has the diagnosis of autism.  Along with the addition of Julia to the show, they released a book entitled We're Amazing, 1, 2, 3!  to increase awareness about autism.

In the Boise School District students who have a diagnosis of autism are served through a variety of programs, based on their individual needs.  Many students with autism are successful in school with no additional services.  Other students with autism receive support through 504 Plans in general education classrooms, or through one of our special education programs when students qualify for an Individual Education Program (IEP).

What is Autism?
According to the Autism SocietyAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person's ability to communicate, and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum condition" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause of autism, but increased awareness and early diagnosis/intervention and access to appropriate services/supports lead to significantly improved outcomes. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in March, 2014 around 1 in 68 American children are on the autism spectrum. Autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls.
