What's Happening in Boise School District

September 12:  Nearly 100 fifth grade students from Maple Grove Elementary School will serve as the lead choir during a Star Spangled Banner sing-a-long event at the State Rotunda from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the National Anthem. This event is sponsored by The American Choral Directors Association of IdahoChildren of all ages, school, community and church choirs and the general public are all invited to participate. There will be a sing-a-long of some favorite patriotic music including My Country 'Tis of Thee, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, You're a Grand Old Flag and, of course, The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. With a little help from Boise Schools Music Department and the State Department of Education participants will wave the U.S. Flag and celebrate our National Anthem in a fun and public way. Folks all across the country are encouraged to log on to www.starspangledmusic.org to learn more about the history of the National Anthem.
 

September 12:  Muppets Most Wanted movie will be presented at dusk at Veteran's Memorial Park (930 Veteran's Memorial Pkwy), sponsored by Boise Parks and Recreation Department.  Boise Parks & Recreation's Mobile Recreation Unit will provide field games for kids until the movie begins. 

 

September 15:  Fall 2014 Community Education session begins and runs through October 23rd. There's a class for everyone!  For more than forty years, Community Education has served as Boise's first choice for lifelong learning opportunities.  Click here to review classes and register.

September 18:  Marian Pritchett High School & Program celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the school will hold a Celebration Dinner for alumnae, former and current staff members, friends and family, and community supporters. Boise School District Students Take Top Honors in National Merit Semifinalists Program:  A total of 19 students from the Boise School District have been named 2015 National Merit Semifinalists. Boise Schools' showing represents 23% of Idaho's National Merit Semifinalists - an impressive figure considering the District has only 9% of Idaho's public school students. A total of 82 students statewide were named to the prestigious scholarship program.   Students in Boise Schools named as Semifinalists are listed below in alphabetical order. These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

As students arrive back to the classroom this year, they will be learning and reviewing classroom procedures and expectations along with collaborating about how to be a positive and responsible citizen. Changes on Boise School Board:  Doug Park (left), Nancy Gregory (center) and Brian Cronin (right) took the Oath of Office from Clerk of the Board Karen Fox during the Boise School Board meeting held on Monday, September 8, 2014.  All three won election during the Boise School Board Election held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. During Monday's meeting, Vice President of the Board Nancy Gregory was elected by the Board to serve as Board President, replacing AJ Balukoff who served as Board President since 2008.  
 
  

 
Boise Schools Make Sure No Child Goes Hungry:  As a new school year starts, the Boise School District is implementing changes to ensure no child goes hungry during the school day. Calling all Interested 11th Grade Students:  Student-Led Service Organization One Stone is looking for 150 Treasure Valley 11th graders to participate in its two-day Think Challenge Oct. 2nd & 3rd. The event pits the creative brainpower of high school juniors against issues of systemic complexity created by adults. Registration deadline is September 15th.

Poverty and Kindergarten Preparedness:  In his latest blog post, Boise School District Superintendent Dr. Don Coberly examines data showing the relationship between kindergarten preparedness and free/reduced lunch percentages among students.  His blog, Data Points, is dedicated to providing student achievement and education trend analysis and is available through Google Sites, or you can read it here or click on the adjacent Data Points image.  The blog is intended for parents and patrons interested in an objective, data-driven look at student performance in Boise and across Idaho.
