Parents in Prayer Meets Mondays Weekly

At Mariners Christian School, we believe that prayer is foundational to all that we do, as well as powerful in establishing spiritual protection for our students so they may grow and learn in God's peace. With that in mind, I would like to invite you to join me and other MCS parents as a part of the Parents-in-Prayer (PIP) team. This year, we will join together every Monday morning at 8:30 AM in the Multi-Purpose Room. You are welcome to join us for any of the mornings that work for you.

Please know that it is a privilege to lift up the needs and prayer requests of our students and their families. You can write down specific requests and clip them to the cross in the lobby, email them to Carrie Olson (Parents in Prayer Coordinator) at [email protected], or send them via text to Carrie Olson at 949-678-0174.

Social Media

MCS is using both Facebook and Twitter to share important announcements and wonderful stories of things happening within our MCS Community.  If you haven't done so, please do take the time to "follow us" on either or both of these platforms, as we don't want you to miss out!

HINT: fun contests and giveaways are forthcoming this year to appreciate our growing group of social media fans!

You can also follow many of MCS's individual teachers on Twitter -- contact them directly for their Twitter names.

First video Middle School students will send to Gulu.
First video Middle School students will send to Gulu.

The year-long, middle school, service project-Giving to Gulu-was launched in chapel today. We are so excited to partner with Christ the Center Ministries School throughout this year as we build relationship, pray, and raise funds to support two exciting initiatives: the Feeding Program and the building expansion of their school!

This is particularly an exciting time in the history of Christ the Center School because they are launching their middle school for the first time ever! How powerful it is for our middle school to be a part of this time in the lives of middle school students in Gulu, Uganda! We encourage parents to talk to their students about all the exciting ways we will partner with Gulu this year.

Most importantly, we ask that you would join us in prayer as we ask God to use us for His kingdom as we respond to His call to be a UNIFIED Christian community within our school and across the world!

Please watch the launch video played during chapel today and our first video we will be sending to Gulu.

MCS: Learn Forward Middle School 1:1 Program Launches Next Week

The countdown is almost over and the long awaited MCS: Learn Forward iPad Initiative launches next week! We can't wait for teachers and students to have this formidable learning tool that will serve as a resource to transform teaching and learning! 8th grade students will receive their iPads on Monday, 7th grade on Tuesday, and 6th grade on Wednesday. In order to receive their iPads, the following MUST occur for each student:

1. MCS Apple ID created by parent
2. Technology Use Agreement signed by student and parent and returned to school

We want all students to receive their iPads on the scheduled date so we ask that parents ensure both of the requirements are met. In addition, students must have the following information with them on their scheduled iPad distribution date:

1. User Name and Password for the MCS Apple ID

Students MUST have that information in order to properly set up their iPad. Parents, please share this information with your students. We recommend that the student checks the user name and password over the weekend to ensure it is correct and that they can successfully log in.

Join us in our excitement as we launch this exciting learning initiative.

Schoology: A New Way to Connect School and Home

This year, MCS is excited to implement a new learning management system-Schoology. Schoology is an online learning platform that improves learning by facilitating greater communication, collaboration, and home-school connection. This learning platform will be used to create, manage, and share content and information including daily homework, grades, events, and classroom learning activities. Schoology will replace RenWeb which will no longer be used by middle school teachers to manage daily grades, homework, or class information.

Do you need a little help and support to learn the ins and outs of Schoology? We believe Schoology is a tremendous support for all parents and want you to know how to access and use all it has to offer. In every enews throughout October we will provide a brief video tutorial to explain a different aspect of Schoology. We are confident this support will ensure all parents will be fully trained and Schoology experts by the end of October. Look forward to our first tutorial topic next Friday: Using the Course Calendar. This tutorial will walk parents through using the calendar to track all assignments, projects, quizzes, activities, and events. In addition, parents will learn how to ensure all children are combined on one parent calendar. In the meantime, if you have any questions or need assistance, please contact [email protected].

High School Fair

Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, November 4, from 3:00-5:00, MCS will host a High School Fair. All MCS families, with students of any age, are invited to attend this fair.

Multiple private and public high schools and two college guidance counselors will participate in our High School Fair. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about our surrounding high schools as you explore your options for the next important step in your child's education.

Schools will set up displays in the auditorium to provide an opportunity for you to speak with individual school representatives and gather information.

We hope to see you there.

Got Drama?

Our Middle School is pleased to offer a drama elective for grades 6-8. This course will explore audition techniques, scene-work, and offer a multitude of opportunities for students to perform. We will also explore acting styles and learn improvisation skills for the theatre. If your student has an interest in the spring musical, this is the perfect class to prepare them for that experience. If interested, please contact the middle school office to assist with schedule changes.

The Student Success Center

Did you know the middle school has a Student Success Center? The goal of SSC is to support students in achieving academic goals by providing homework help and strengthening skills in organization, time management, and test preparation. We want to teach students strategies that will help them achieve success in both their academic careers and for the rest of their lives beyond MCS. Students who want to take advantage of this tremendous resource can stop by the SSC located upstairs next to the administration office to meet Mrs. Willis, receive more information, and sign up for the after school help. The SSC is open to students during the following times:
  • Tuesday- 6th grade only: 3:00-3:30
  • Wednesday-8th grade only: 3:00-3:30
  • Thursday-7th grade only: 3:00-3:30
  • Friday- Any grade: 3:00-3:30
To provide the best support, it is imperative students sign up prior to attending. We are excited to provide this great resource to our students and are thrilled to work with students throughout the year!

Local High Schools

Periodically, high schools ask us to promote events and/or admissions/registration information which we will include in this section.

Weekly Wednesday Worship Discipleship Group
Begins on Wednesday, October 7th, 8:00-8:45AM

Held in the Learning Commons (formerly the library) every Wednesday morning from 8:00-8:45AM, just show up ready with a heart for worship (no need to sign up in advance).

This class will cover the basics of what it means to be a true worshipper of God with a lens for applying that knowledge toward leading worship.  It will include reading and discussions on systematic theology, servant leadership, and biblical understanding of who God is and why He's worthy of worship.

Students participating in the elective class do not need to be on the worship team but all who want to learn more about worshipping our God are invited to attend.  It is specifically designed for 7th and 8th graders.  However, 6th graders who would like to attend just need to contact Mr. McCall.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. McCall at [email protected]
