Farewell from the Health Office
Dear MCS Families -
After careful consideration and much encouragement from my family, I have tendered my resignation as MCS Health Office Manager. This is due to health concerns and my husband's desire for me to be home taking care of myself. Please know that I cherish the MCS students, staff, and families and have thoroughly enjoyed my years serving here. I will remain in touch by being on the Office Substitute List so I will pop in from time to time. May the Lord bless each and every one of you with a restful summer and a long life of serving Him.
Grace & Peace, Leslie Stuart

January 2014: MCS Receives An Email & Photos from The Weissberg Family
Dear Friends and Family,
It has been a while since we last wrote and Jon is just over half way through his deployment in the Persian Gulf. The last few months have been exciting. (continued below photos) Jon has felt his most rewarding moments have been flying combat missions in support of the ground troops finishing up Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). His first mission was just before Veteran's Day and it put a new perspective on the sacrifice of all of our military. He has been especially honored to fly air cover for the US Marines. (Ooh-rah!) In one mission, Jon remarked "the Marines were especially thankful for a specific fly-over 200 feet off the ground and show of military strength after hours of heavy fire." The Marines had been bombarded for hours with enemy fire and nothing they tried deterred the enemy. Jon's fighter support mission flew through the battlefield, flexing our military muscle. The gunfire stopped and Jon felt satisfaction that he may have saved American lives. Jon is not able to disclose the location of these missions, but judging from the fact that it took six hours to complete the mission, it is probably somewhere in Afghanistan. Several of the combat missions and flights have involved a joint cooperation with our international allies, particularly France, Denmark and England. Jon recently flew a joint air-to-air training exercise against six French fighter planes that are in the Gulf on the French aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle. Additionally, Jon provided the aerial support for British ground troops as they were searching buildings within an undisclosed community. This is a reminder that the war and fight against terror is a sacrificial effort of the entire world.
We are happy to report that the food is getting better on the carrier. It took a visit from the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) to see firsthand how poor the food was. He was a special guest for Thanksgiving and the Truman ran out of food. The CNO made it a priority to improve the food quality and quantity onboard the Truman and it has had a positive effect. For Christmas they even surprised the sailors with Steak and Shrimp. Jon said it was good, but not quite like home cooking. A vast improvement though!
A few milestones have been reached already on deployment. First, Jon got his name on a plane! It was a nice surprise and accomplishment. He has also clocked approximately 190 hours of flying off the USS Harry S. Truman and 80 traps (landings). Before leaving for deployment, Jon purchased a Go-Pro camera and received approval to film a few of his flights. He created his first 2 minute movie and the link is included below. The video gives you the realization of how fast and fluid they fly. Their average flight speed is 500-700 nautical miles per hour. You will also notice how little they fly straight and level. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jiv176y1t6rjvx8/_HpwSxGFiA/First%20Video-2.wmv?m
Many have asked us about time off while on deployment. About once every 45 days, the carrier has pulled into port in either Dubai or Bahrain for supplies and a few days of liberty. Jon has been able to see the world's tallest building (Burj Khalifa) and world's largest indoor mall in Dubai. The mall even has an indoor ski slope which Jon and his friends skied just to say that they did it! The liberty gave Jon a chance to catch up on sleep, have some R&R, enjoy a good steak (or possibly Camel) dinner, and Skype sessions with us.
Jon is in awe of the support of our community and the miraculous way many of you are showing the Love of Christ 8,000 miles away to the sailors. Two notable acts-of-kindness are:
1) Mariners Christian School raised $12,000 in funds through a Pancake Breakfast and other events to send the USS Harry S. Truman 600 $20 phone cards so that the sailors could call home for Christmas.
2) Grace Fellowship Church Women's Bible Study sent 38 Care Packages (500 pounds of snacks, toiletries, etc.) to Jon's Squadron for Thanksgiving. Jon said many of the sailors have posted the poems and notes included in the packages on the walls of their workplaces.
Please keep praying for Jon and the Truman. His specific requests are for:
1) Some free time to participate in the Sunday Church Service or a new Bible Study that is starting on the carrier. Jon recently got his first Sunday morning off in 11 weeks and took his roommate with him to church. One of the Senior Officers is trying to start a new study onboard and told Jon that he will do his best to work around Jon's schedule so that he can participate.
2) For morale onboard.
3) Safety! (Need we say more!)
Mail call on a carrier is always an exciting time. Here's a helicopter bringing in supplies and mail. If you would like to write a card or letter of encouragement, Jon's address is:

December 2013: MCS Receives a "Thank You Email" From the USS Truman
"Good Morning, My name is AME2(AW) John Doering and I am in one of the squadrons on Carrier Air Wing 3 deployed on the USS Harry S. Truman. I just wanted to send you a thank you message and to tell you that I really appreciate your school taking the time out of your schedules to do a fundraiser and send us all phone cards. That really does mean a lot to us. I am thankful to have received one from you and I know that my girlfriend back in Virginia will be happy to hear my voice again. Again, thank you for the phone cards and everything that your school has done for us. I hope you have a great day."
Sincerely,
AME2(AW) John Doering
Strike Fighter

November 2013: Team Truman Special Chapel & Pancake Breakfast
In honor of Veterans Day and to show our support and gratitude for the men and women of the Air Wing of the USS Harry S. Truman, students wore their Team Truman T-Shirts and enjoyed a special chapel dedicated to learning more about the ship.
Thank you to the Middle School ASB for providing a fantastic breakfast and opportunity for the MCS family to enjoy a morning of fun and fellowship. We raised $1,665 to benefit the men and women of the USS Truman. Thank you for your participation!

October 2013: MCS Adopts the Truman
The buck stops at MCS as Mariners' students have adopted the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman as part of an ongoing service project. All students were introduced to the program in chapels which included a presentation from Brian and Diane Weissberg (pictured left), alumni parents of Jon Weissberg (MCS class of 2002). Jon is a Naval Academy graduate and is currently serving in the Persian Gulf aboard the Truman as an F-18 navigations officer.
As we approach Veterans Day, MCS is proud to partner with the Weissbergs to bless the crew of the Truman. God bless our Veterans.
Team Truman T-shirts were sent home to wear on T-shirt Tuesdays and special Team Truman Days (watch for details).
