CSLEA Legal Counsel Ryan Navarre
"One of the most difficult tasks I encounter as a CSLEA Attorney is when a member calls who has just been diagnosed with a serious disability or disease such as cancer or has been involved in a serious non-work related accident or has just given birth to a child and they want to know what their options are for disability leave, and I have to tell them that if they do not have a supplemental disability insurance program or they aren't enrolled in annual leave, they can only count on $135 a week for up to 26 weeks."

President's Message

Alan Barcelona, CSLEA President
To our valued CSLEA members,
Each and every one of you have a vital role in protecting the citizens and/or the resources of California. The jobs you perform each day help to keep the public safe. This week hundreds of our dispatchers and communications operators are being recognized during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, April 13-19, 2014.
Dispatchers and communications operators put the 'first' in first responder. They are the first to be alerted to an emergency, a non-emergency, a disaster, a need for help. I look at some of the major calls for help over the past year and know the professionalism that was displayed under extreme stress. There have been calls of an airliner down at San Francisco International, a limousine fire with people trapped on the San Mateo Bridge, a bus crash and fire in Glenn County, wildfires throughout the state. Some calls made headlines, others did not. Children calling, parents calling, officers calling, we turn to 911 call-takers to start the emergency response rolling. We thank you for your calm, clear questions and instructions that guide us through the times in which we cannot help ourselves. We thank you for the long hours and time spent away from your families in order to keep other families safe from harm.
Also spending time away from their families to help keep Californians safe are members on the CSLEA Consumer Protection and Public Safety Foundation. Over the past two months, Foundation members have made presentations at seminars put on by state lawmakers for their constituents. The seminars focus on the scams that target Californians, especially our senior citizens. They help to make citizens aware of the very scams our CSLEA members work to put a stop to. We are committed to protecting Californians where they live, work and play.
I thank you for your service.
Fraternally,
Alan Barcelona
