The Old Logger's Path is a 27.8-mile circuit through remote areas in northeastern Lycoming County.  In order to vividly contrast the pristine Old Logger's Path of the past, with the 'developed' trail of tomorrow, we traveled to a two-mile construction site along Bodine Mountain Road on the west side of Route 14. On our way to the "scenic vista" identified on our map, we saw huge cuts in the mountain to accommodate new pipelines, pipeline trenches and mountaintop leveling to prepare for five-acre gas drilling pads. "Parks for Cash" Update

Hikers can rejoice because the "Parks for Cash" bill is dead!  Pennsylvania House Bill 2224 died in the Senate in October.  Read more.

At KTA's General Membership Meeting on Saturday, October 13, the following individuals were recognized for their hiking and volunteer achievements through KTA's Award Program.    In addition to KTA's Award Program, KTA recognizes individuals that complete the 100-Mile Trail Challenge (see photo of Nicole Sarver, 100-Mile Challenge participant, on left) and that provide exceptional service to KTA's Trail Care Program.  Read more. 

 

Our Collective Voice
 

Unlike the industries, corporations, and interest groups who are encroaching on new protected areas every day, and are an increasing threat to alter the landscape of Pennsylvania's forests and trails forever, KTA simply does not have the lobbying power and unlimited resources to easily hold our ground against their aggressive agenda.  However, we have you: our collective voice.  Read more.

Volunteers from the Friends of Gifford Pinchot State Park, the Mason-Dixon Trail System and KTA gathered on Saturday, October 6th for the last scheduled one-day "Code Orange" trail care of the 2012 season.  Read more.

 

Member Profile: Michael Cunningham

Born in Danbury, CT, Michael Cunningham has been hiking for 55 of his 66 years.  He became involved with KTA many years ago after reading KTA's Pennsylvania Hiking Trails book.  With 145 miles remaining until he completes the PA portion of the Appalachian Trail (AT), Michael decided to attempt KTA's 100-Mile Trail Challenge to push him to finish it, along with exploring the Loyalsock, Thunder Swamp, Chuck Keiper, Horseshoe, and Mason Dixon trails.  Read more. 

 
PA Appalachian Trail Guide, 12th Edition

 

At KTA's Annual Meeting, Wayne Gross, KTA Publications Committee Chair and Guide Editor, announced completion of the 12th Edition of the Pennsylvania Appalachian Trail Guide.  Read more.

  

New Director Appointed to Bureau of State Parks
 
In late October, DCNR Secretary Richard Allan announced that he is appointing David Kemmerer as the new Director of the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks. A 38-year veteran of the state park system (most recently, serving as Assistant Bureau Director) Director Kemmerer will now oversee Pennsylvania's system of 120 state parks, comprising nearly 300,000 acres of land.  Read more.
