KTA FALL COUNCIL MEETING

KTA will be headed to the heart of Pennsylvania in Clearfield this year for our Fall Hiking Weekend, from October 12-14, 2012. With a base camp at the Comfort Inn of Clearfield, volunteer hike leaders from the Quehanna Area Trails Club will guide both new and experienced hikers through the best trails in the area.

On Saturday, October 13, members of the KTA Council (Club Representatives, Representatives-at-Large, Committee Chairs, Board Members, etc), along with any other KTA member that wishes to participate, will come together during KTA's Fall Council Meeting from 4-6 PM to discuss important issues regarding Keystone Trails Association, KTA's member organizations, and hikers/hiking trails throughout Pennsylvania.  Does your club have a concern they would like to address at the Council meeting?  If your club has an item that you would like to have included on the meeting's Agenda, please let us know by October 1.

Saturday evening, KTA friends will partake in a hearty and delicious buffet, KTA's annual General Membership Meeting, and the presentation of the 2012 Hiking Awards.

Want to stay the whole weekend?  KTA members and their friends will be able to enjoy hiking, activities, meals, meetings, and camaraderie in Clearfield, Clearfield County, PA. The Quehanna Area Trails Club and the Ridge and Valley Outings Club have teamed up with KTA to offer a wide range of interesting and engaging activities for our Fall Hiking Weekend participants!   For more information about the Fall Hiking Weekend, or how to register, click here.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

This year, the Keystone Trails Association has scored a number of victories in the interest of local hiking clubs that only a statewide organization could provide. I hope your members know of our successes with stopping Sunday hunting, reinstating the Keystone Fund and other advocacy efforts here in Harrisburg.   We look to you to share those stories with your members so that they know the value of KTA and how your club financially contributes to our success.

Last November, KTA's Board of Directors sent a letter to all local club Presidents and KTA Representatives outlining the relationship between KTA and the local clubs.    I am pleased to report that a number of clubs voluntarily increased their commitment to KTA in 2012.

KTA's fiscal year ends September 30, 2012.  We are in the process of setting our goals for 2013 and a budget that will allow us to accomplish those goals. I'm sure at some point each year your club goes through the same process.

This year, we would like to better understand what our member clubs are budgeting for KTA in 2013. If you could please let us know what your club might be able to contribute to KTA in 2013, it would greatly help in our planning process.  As a general guideline, we are looking for larger clubs to contribute $1,000 or more and for smaller clubs to contribute $500 or more.

With a pledge of $33,000 from KTA's member clubs, Keystone Trails Association's board can prepare a budget that will adequately fund a robust trails advocacy program in Harrisburg before state government.   If pledges for 2013 stay at the current level of approximately $3,190, then the advocacy efforts will have to be reduced sharply or cease altogether.

Please contact me by email at ktahike@verizon.net or by phone at 717-238-7017 with your best thoughts on what your club might be able to pledge in 2013.

Thank you,
Curt Ashenfelter, KTA Executive Director

MEET JIM CARSON

Meet Jim Carson of Warrenton, VA, a 2012 Super Hike participant.  Jim owns a civil engineering business and has been hiking for the past 13 years.  He is a self-proclaimed "gear-head" when it comes to hiking equipment.  Hiking is the quickest way to deal with stress for Jim -- an hour in the woods leaves him care-free and clear-headed!  He decided to register for the Super Hike because he loves a challenge. Over the past few years Jim has been increasing his distances and enjoys the accomplishment of completing endurance events. For Jim, hiking is the best way to prepare for the Super Hike, and says that hiking is a balance of strength, cardio and nimbleness that simply cannot be found in a gym.

Registration for the 2012 Super Hike is now closed, but you can support Jim and the other 499 hikers and trail runners signed up for this event by becoming a Super Volunteer!  We have opportunities for individuals, couples, families and groups -- just let us know what you would like to do, and how much time you can offer!  Event volunteers receive a Super Hike t-shirt and free admission to the after-picnic.  To volunteer, please click here
