KEYSTONE TRAILS ASSOCIATION'S CLUB CONNECTION
Working together to preserve Pennsylvania's footpaths since 1956
April, 2012

Greetings!

KTA's member clubs are the backbone of Keystone Trails Association.  Keystone Trails Association was created by - and for - hiking clubs like yours throughout the state of Pennsylvania.  Together, you are Keystone Trails Association.

The KTA Club Connection helps your club stay informed about club-specific KTA activities and events.  Please share this newsletter with your club officers and members electronically or in print. Consider reporting on at least one item of interest with your club at your next meeting; together, we can raise awareness within the hiking community of Keystone Trails Association and our representation of hikers in Pennsylvania's capital.

LEAD HIKES DURING PA HIKING WEEK

Calling all hike leaders! You are now able to add your local hikes to the PA Hiking Week schedule! We are hoping to offer over 100 hikes across Pennsylvania, between May 26 and June 3, 2012, and need your help to do so. Please pass this information along to anyone that may be interested in coordinating and leading a hike during this annual week-long event.  For instructions on how to add your guided hike to the PA Hiking Week Calendar, please click here.  If you would prefer KTA to enter in your hikes for you, please e-mail Shanna (ktaadmin@verizon.net) all pertinent information about your hikes as soon as possible. Thank you!

SHARE YOUR NEWS

Has your club conducted an unusual hike, outstanding program, or celebrated a milestone event? Please let us know as soon as possible (e-mail ktaadmin@verizon.net) so that we can share your news in our newsletter and/or our Facebook page.

100-MILE TRAIL CHALLENGE

KTA has initiated a new program for 2012, called the 100-Mile Trail Challenge. The 100-Mile Trail Challenge will recognize hikers that complete 100 miles or more of Pennsylvania hiking trails between April 1 and September 1, 2012. Participants are challenged not just to complete 100 (or more) miles of trails, but to secure sponsorships for each mile of their journey.

KTA Member Clubs may want to consider sponsoring one or more of their chapter members to participate in the 100-Mile Challenge, as a way to support their club member, KTA, and Pennsylvania's hiking trails all at once!   Whether or not your club chooses to act as a sponsor, please consider encouraging your club members to participate in the KTA 100-Mile Trail Challenge.

FEDERAL ENERGY REGULATORY COMMISSION

by Curt Ashenfetler, KTA Executive Director

Recently, KTA wrote a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission concerning the transfer of land from a corporation to the Lancaster County Conservation Landscape Initiative in support of the Mason-Dixon Trail System and the Conestoga Trail System.  For the full story, or to read the actual letter, please click here

Member clubs who need support for their trail before local, state or the federal government should contact the Keystone Trails Association.

PROWL THE SPROUL & DONUT HOLE SLACKPACK

KTA will host the 9th annual Prowl the Sproul hiking weekend from July 20 to July 22, 2012 in the Sproul State Forest of western Clinton County. Hikers will be able to explore new and exciting parts of the Sproul that are only seen when hiking with a DCNR guide.  In addition to the terrific selection of day hikes already offered at Prowl the Sproul, twenty experienced and fit hikers will have the opportunity to slackpack the 30-40 mile eastern-most section of the famed Donut Hole Trail (DHT) during the three-day weekend.
