Brenda Burch

Welcome to our newly redesigned Cowichan Social Connection. (catchy name, eh?). I hope my new Timeline format for Facebook document, which you can access here, will be of benefit.  The document not only includes the changes that occur with the new Timeline, but best practices in operating a Facebook Business Page and tips on content creation and increasing engagement and fans. And, this document is only available to you - our valued subscribers.

I expect most of our fans and readers have heard about the new Anti-Spam laws becoming effective July 1, 2014 in Canada.  To that end, if you DON'T want to receive this newsletter, please just click the unsubscribe button at the bottom of this newsletter and your name will instantly be removed from our list.

I hope you are enjoying our lovely, sunny June so far!  Stay Calm and Social On!

New Facebook Timeline Changes

As you may have noticed by now, Facebook has rolled out its new look for PAGES. Facebook says that its a "streamlined look for Pages that will make it easier for people to find the information they want and help Page admins find the tools they use most."

Please find attached a guide to help you with your new Timeline challenges. Another great resource is this post by Jon Loomer. As always, if you have questions, contact me.

Some Features:
  • An updated timeline design - The right column of your timeline now displays all your Page's posts. This means all of your posts will appear consistently on your Page and in your Newsfeed.
  • The left column will feature information about your business e.g. map, business hours, contact information and website URL.
  • Easier access to admin tools - You can view information such as ads, likes, unread notifications and messages. There are also new navigation options at the top of the page.
  • Pages to watch - This allows you(admins) to see key stats about the pages you are watching. You can track other Pages engagement.

Cowichan Valley Social Media Club
Christina Platt of Bamboletta Dolls
The Cowichan Valley Social Media Club enjoyed a great meeting on June 11th. Our guest speaker was Christina Platt of Bamboletta Dolls. She told us how she used Facebook and Instagram to grow a dedicated following. Her advice is to be authentic and weird. Don't be afraid to be human. She mentioned how she is overwhelmed by the letters she receives from mothers sharing their personals stories. Christina ensure she creates a real connection. She engages with her followers in a fun way; she will go to their Facebook page and scan their interests and comment directly about similar interests.

You can check out Bamboletta Dolls Facebook page here.

As always, we had a diverse gathering of talent in the room. We shared food and stories, caught up with folks we haven't seen for awhile and shared tips about our social media journey.

We truly put the "social" in social media.
CASL - Canada Anti-Spam Legislation

On July 1st, CASL will come into effect. What does that mean to you and me? For any of us who use Commercial Electronic Messages (CEMs) to connect with people on our lists, we must have express permission to contact them.

Most reputable programs have permission-based text and unsubscribe elements built in.

I appreciate that you gain value from my e-newsletter and thank you for your continued support. If you decide you do not wish to receive future emails from me, you can use the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.

Thank you Brenda for helping set up our new facebook page. You do make it simple.

Shirley Kolompar, Cowichan School of Motoring Inc.

As for spending time together at Hilary's Cheese Launch party and Clemens Rettich's workshop, I assure you, the pleasure was ours as well. You have such a witty sense of humour and you are one of those people..."when Brenda speaks, we listen". It was a great seminar and I have so many take-aways from it. So glad we attended. (me too! Clemens is an excellent business coach)

Veronica Haits, co-owner Funky Frog B & B - one of Trip Advisor's most recommended B & B on Vancouver Island! Congrats to you and David!
